Is there another place to accurately check the oil pressure? I need to check my current gauge with a mechanical one and would rather not have to battle with the dizzy, linkage, and firewall for wrenching space. Is there another port I can use? I heard of one near the oil filter, but haven't checked. Not sure if this would be a good port to use either.

The one by the oil filter is what was recommended to me also

Some small blocks had a 1/8" NPT pipe plug located above the water pump just under the intake...I'm not sure if hooking a gauge up to that oil passage will give an acurate indication of the actual pressure or not,but I dont see why it wouldn't....I think it is fed from the lifter galley...

you could but the farther away from the pump the less pressure / volume.

so the readings might be off a bit.

thats why if you starve a sbc or bbc the #1 main or #1-2 rods tend to wipe out a bearing first. last to get the oil.

Agreed--also many engines with A/C compressors tend to wear out the #1 main bearing more than usual due to the load of the compressor,I have noticed many with copper showing on the bearing insert on the #1 main next to the timing gear...

I found the oil port, but it's in bad shape. Haven't tried yet, but it's paint caked and oblong. What tool is used for removal? Allen?

Mine had a hex head plug in it - since you don't have a stock engine it really just depends what the builder used
