Ole' Red. Slow n steady

That's my thoughts. It's not a rare or special car. Plus I want OD, MPFI, and adjustable electronic ignition.
I can put the LS/4l80e combo I have already in this, for less than rebuilding the olds long block alone.
I may keep the stuff that comes out around, but it won't be staying in it.

The transmission is already not original or period correct , as it was replaced in the mid 80's. What's one more piece lol.
 
Ill have to make a little room.
 
There's a premade tunnel, for this car, for exactly that reason. $180 but it's worth it so that I don't have to figure it all out, and it works with the factory console
I was gonna say I think someone makes a tunnel for those cars.
 
I came home from the hospital in a blue ‘71 Cutlass 307 3 speed.

My dumb ass passed on a low mile ‘71 2 owner San Diego survivor for $1800 back in 2000. Too into wasting money on girls and my Blazer.
 
Drove into the home garage under its own power. Didn't have that knock noise until I installed the new mechanical fuel pump. But it oddly doesn't sound like it's coming from that area. Soo.. :dunno:
It sounds more mid driver's side.
Not a big deal. But I was kinda hoping to drive it around a little as is before it gets taken apart. After a set of tires anyway.

The knock sounds really slow. Wouldn’t that be equivalent to a fuel pump? Maybe it’s bottoming out? I would definitely take it back off and see if it goes away
 
That fuel pump I think is driven off of an eccentric bolted to the timing gear for the cam. I’ve heard you can have issues there if it comes loose. If the engine didn’t rattle before putting a fuel pump on it that’s where I’d look first.

The cam is running at half the crank speed anyway which may explain the slow timing to the knock.


Odd realization here. The name Red reminds me of Red from Shawshank Redemption. Looks like ‘ol red finally got out of prison and is on his way to freedom again.
 
When I had it running to begin with It was on an electric. When I got the car the old fuel pump was off. Me being a Chevy guy, I bought the new one and hung it lines side down. But it didn't work, so I just used the electric.
Watched a vid to try and see what drives the pump and found out I had it upside down lol.
Put it in right, and this started. So It'll probably come back out and I'll just run the electric for a bit.
 
Not yet. I'm fairly sure it will. I didn't hear that noise until I put that pump in.
When I backed it out that noise only happened lightly and not the whole time.
Soo... ? Still going to throw the electric in again to see.

Earlier in the day I changed the driver's side tierod, then swapped to the electric pump again trying to eliminate the knock. Then backed it out into the 100* day, and went back inside for about 2 hrs.
Left the electric pump on...:whistle:
It felt like it was about to start on fire when I remembered and went back out to shut it off.
Car still started so I decided to take a quick ride.

First, the knock is still there... sounds central in the engine. Like right under the carb:dunno:

But anyway, I took it half way up the alley before that electric pump died. I rolled it back down the alley and changed the mechanical one back in.
Outside, in the 124 heat index, in the sun...:angry1:

Got it started back up, and we drove it around a few blocks quick just for giggles. It ran good, did a burnout, then i brought it home due to a transmission leak that I'm not sure of the extent yet. Didn't want to go too far and find out the hard way.
 
I actually ordered parts for this at last.
Quick cheap chit so I can drive it around town this summer.
Shocks, trans filter/seal, plug wires, and an oil filter.
I'll get all the fluids changed, wires, and shocks done. Then checkout all the brake lines to see if there's any real bad spots.

Then I can drive it around town, here and there. It'll be at least this winter before I can do anymore to it.
 
I should have the Jeep I'm working on out of the shop in the next few days or so. Then this comes in for the new chit.
That way we can drive this at least while the burb is in for all its upgrades. I'm hoping for a July 4th cruise through the riverfront and parks in town.

A couple weeks ago I had to get it out of the garage to swap the snowblower and mowers storage spot.
Hooked the battery up, gave it a few pumps and cranked it a short bit and she started. Surprised the chit out of me. Didn't crank long.
It did die as soon as I put it in gear. But started immediately back up and I put it in gear and backed it out just fine right after it started.
 
Well, it became time to get started on this.:waytogo:
I'm just going to do mild things to make it drivable in town.
Brake lines, transmission fluid/filter, all engine fluids, shocks, cheap analog 3 gauge kit, and a good ole once over on the lift to look for potential issues.

It backed out of the garage, and gingerly drove the 1.5 mile to my shop under its own power.

Probably start on it tomorrow :woot:

Noticed right off the bat that is has a blown brake line to the rear.
Directly under the driver's door.
So if that's bad, I'm probably just going to replace the whole thing and be done. Along with all 3 rubber lines. Since I have to bleed it anyway.
