Only runs while spraying carb cleaner down carb

I saw a really nice el camino on CL and the guy says it only runs if he sprays carb cleaner down the carb while he cranks the engine. Fuel delivery? I thought carb cleaner bogs down the engine, I dont see why that would be the only way to keep it running. Also I assume I need an adaptor to run a quadrajet carb in place of a holley on an edlebrock intake manifold correct?

Fuel pump maybe ?

An old guy taught me a trick where you take a small plastic jar of gas with a hose snug into a hole in the top , attach hose to carb inlet , hold upside down and it should run if the fuel pumps bad . Get ya home trick that would work to see if the fuel pumps bad .

If the windshield washer fluid jug or over flow jug is empty they work better.The fuel pump and or filter is probably bad or there could be a hole in the line going along the frame.
