just to bring up to speed, i had an oil leak on my 85 so started checking and first thought the valve covers . changed gaskets and still had leak, so checked timming chain cover and their it was last owner tried to do a fast fix and not drop the oil pan to put the cover on correctlly and decided to use RTV to seal the space between the pan and cover. So I said since I m doing the fix this ill change everything while im here, timing chain ,gasket seal ,oil pan gasket oil pump screen and rearmain seal etc.. So i started on the rear mail seal and as I was torquing down on the bolt to 135 lbs as book said to i snapped one of the rear main seal bolts.....

So my question what did I get my self into. Do i just need to get an extractor set and back it out or do I need to be cautious bout other things that im not thinking about ???????

any info is gladly taken..

Is it broken below the surface of the block? Unless crossthreaded or bottomed out it is most likely loose in the threads and if you can get pliers or something similar it should screw out by hand. If tight, do the extractor thing. Put some heavy grease on the drill if you drill it and it will catch the cuttings and keep them from flying somewhere bad.

Were you torquing the rear main seal bolt to 135 ft/lbs?:eek1: Is that the spec for the small bolt that holds the seal in place? That seems extreemly excessive.

yes it is below the surface. And I agree to 135 was a bit much , ill have to double check and may even triple check the specs. I was questioning that right before the snap of that bolt.

Now have to run around and find some bolts to replace them with.

Thanks for the info ..

135 lb/ft......you must have a misprint

Rear main spec is 65 ft lbs with 7/16 bolts

Try an EZ Out extractor....they work pretty well

The grease on the drill bit suggestion is a good one too

135 ft/lbs is more than "a bit much"; it is over double the spec.:doah: I hope you did not stress the block where the seal goes.

Best of luck to you,
