I have a 77 Jimmy frame and have the opportunity to pick up a good 14 bolt diff with a Detroit locker and 456 gears. Im under the impression its out of a 3/4 ton Chevy Ex Military truck. I think my only question is... are the spring pads in the same place as the Jimmy's on the axle tube or do I need to relocate them?

Spring perches on a 1/2 & 3/4 ton are same.

The problem is ALL of the military 14 bolts with 4.56's and Detroits only came in 1 ton CUCV's. You will have to move the perches and shock brackets on this axle.

Perfect! Thanks for the expert info.

is there a craigslist ad we can look at? Can't go wrong measuring the perches either

If you're getting it cheap, it's easy to pull the carrier and pinion to install into a 3/4 housing... But yeah,I would measure to see if it's a 1 ton or 3/4 ton housing first...

Dirtygoat, I tried to PM you this but your box is full, but:

I happen to have both a CUCV 14b and a 3/4 ton 14bff. I'm not all that familiar with gears but is it simple as dropping the gears in the 3/4 ton housing and having someone check the patterns? I'm trying to do this cheaply, so if you think getting new spring pads welded on would be cheaper I'll go that route.

Its not on Craigslist its through a friend and it looks like we will be doing a barter thing for a 60 front and 14 bolt rear. Spring Pad & shock relocation really isn't a problem for me. It will be a good opportunity to get a better drive line angle as well.

Thanks for the input :waytogo:

I let my membership expire, so no PM privileges...

As far as gears go, the 14bff is the easiest diff to work on IMHO... I've swapped gears from housings and had good luck... After the carrier is pulled, unbolt the pinion and transfer the shims along with it to the new axle... Usually the shims will transfer pinion depth, then run the carrier pattern... The 14 Bolt Bible on private 4x4 has all this info... If you've never messed with gears, a 14bff is the perfect axle to start with...

Thanks for the info. It comes with the 4.56's and right now Im running 3.73's with 38's. Thinking the 14bff and gearing & Detroit will be just fine for cross desert runs. I want to get away from that 12 bolt & Gov Lock... I just don't trust it.

:bow::bow::woot::woot: Just found out that the matching front D60 out of the same rig may be available! Could the K5 Gods be that KIND? :D
