Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

Ah, I remember the day when I got my LockRights. I was so excited I couldn't hardly contain myself. And I had to wait several days before I could put them in.

It's kind of funny, ours have the same number of teeth yet yours is quite a bit bigger than mine.

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

Tim if you thought x-over was awsome you will need a rag on your seat with you when you drive a fully locked 4x4. It is another one of those "I don't know how I did this before?" type of things. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

In case you haven't installed one read the D60 tech article on the mainpage as removing the cross shaft in the carrier is different in 60's. (need a long thin punch). It took me a good hour of cussing and twistin before I looked up the info and made a punch (read cut the tip off of a long cheap japanese screwdriver). If this is old news don't be offended as I wanted it to be here to help somebody like myself in the future.

Enjoy the true 4wd feeling.

Tbanks for the tip, I've been dreading the roll pin. I'll be installing it this weekend.

What article covers this on this page?

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

Here ya go www.coloradok5.com/dana60manual
And here it the actual picture of the carrier removal
page28.jpg

The top right picture shows the x-shaft pin deal. The caption on the following intallation page is wrong. On most 60's the lock pin is a punch fit, not a screw. Hope this helps. I scored a 1985 (publishing date not vehicle date) chiltons for $8 at a local thrift store and it help out immensely. (the early chiltons make little reference to specialty $$ tools, just a lot of hammers and punches)

Oh, if you have 4.10 gears and higher you should be able to intall the whole thing with it in the axle (at least that is how mine worked out)

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

I know how to get the carrier out that's no biggie.

I just wondered exactly how long this punch needs to be to drive the roll pin out. Will it come out with a regular 1/4" drift?

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

IIRC, it needs to be something like 1/8" and about 4-5" long to push it all the way out from the ring side. A standard punch in that size is not going to be long enough, at least mine was not.

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

Hmm. 1/8" and 5" long? Where am I going to find something like that?

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

Screwdriver. Craftsman philips screwdrivers are about perfect to be used as punches. Once the head strips out I cut the end off and use them for punches. Once the handle is all monkeyed up, I break the shank and then have it replaced.

Craftsman screwdrivers are junk anyway, they're like condoms, use them once and throw them away. I've shattered countless flat screwdrivers, one time it cut my eyelid when I was taking mudflaps off my truck. And I was only using one hand. Every year I buy a new box of the 21 or 27 set screwdrivers. But I digress.

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

I destroy craftsman stuff on a regular basis too. I don't give a rat's ass, I just take it in and they replace it.

Using a #2 screwdriver with the end ground off sounds like a great idea. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I dunno what it is about the D60, but everything that used to be easy about working on the front axle is now history, with the only exception being that the knuckles and steering arm can be easily removed.

The bendix style calipers and that stupid roll pin are among some of the stupidist ideas I've seen to date.

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

This project is DONE.

The driver's side axle shaft MUST be pulled to install this. even with them all the way outboard, I could not get it together.

VERY easy install. Unfortunately no action shots of using it yet, that's going ot be tomorrow I hope!

My power steering hates me. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

what part of the calipers is it that causes you grief?
other then they were designed for larger diameter tires I never have any troubles with them
in fact I prefer them over the total crap that chev used on just about every other application
only upgrade I can see would be a fixed caliper design

congrats on the upgrades

Re: Ordered up a front lockright!!

I just think that the 10 bolt/D44 setup is much simpler.

None of it causes me grief, just with all the grinding I had to get into the little piece of hardware that holds in the caliper so if it was bolts like the 10 bolt/44 it wouldn't have that problem.

That said I wouldn't trade my huge brakes for any crap off a D44/10 bolt. Much nicer to have big brakes with big tires.
