picked up a 1960 studebaker

How's the rear axle coming?

It's all one piece again and I'm working on moving the spring perches and setting the pinion angle again.

The piece of angle I bought didn't place the two halves very straight so instead I used a piece of tube that had the same ID as the axle OD to set the first tack welds.

Then I welded the two halves fully and smoothed out the weld to slide the sleeve over and weld it in. I didn't want to relocate the breather tube either.
But it helped as an alignment tool because I drilled the hole to just clear the socket that fits it.

And here fully welded, there's 10 plug welds evenly distributed around the tube.

I also got my steering wheel and column adapter, I think it'll be a nice looking package when I get the interior all finished.

It was actually a bit undersize and the axle a bit oversize so I ended up slitting the sleeve lengthwise and tightly hose clamping it closed around the axle tube for as best a fit as I could get.

Started work on the airbox I like how it came out but I might do another variation with a radius on the side toward the motor that would follow the radius of the filter.

It won't be 100% sealed but it'll be close and the tube will be different.

Awesome progress, really looking forward to seeing this thing on the road!!! I'm trying to decide what my next car project is going to be, over the last few months I've picked up a ls1/t56 combo and a ls3 now they need a home. Also scored a miata dirt cheap, but the cost of swap parts and the fact that im 6'1"/250lb kinda throws that out the window.

After I finished narrowing the axle I tried bolting up the mounted steel wheels and they were still a good ways off from fitting without modifying the body.

I started looking around for another wheel that would fit and came across a different American racing torque thrust style that had various offset options, had the correct center bore clearance, and was actually a 1/2" wider. I looked on summit racing but they were backordered and $200 each which I didn't really want to fork out.

After taking some better measurements of the fender and seeing that these wheels would fit really well, I was set on finding some so I entered the part number into Google and found some places selling them cheaper but the one that really surprised me was Walmart, yes Walmart and they were $30 cheaper each than on summit with free shipping and no tax. I placed the order the week before Thanksgiving and they arrived last Wednesday and I was able to get them mounted up today.

They're a matte grey with a deeper machined lip than the other torque thrust wheel I tried and they're about half the weight of the steel ones and I like how they go with the stainless trim on the car as well.

Dont know why, but for some reason I love the fact that the rear windows roll down. I guess its the import side of me coming out, but would look awesome with a roof rack on it.
