whats the problem?
are you worried about the rust or does something else concern you? Rust appears to be simply surface rust to me... if so, its no big deal really. I'd take a green-scratchy pad to it before I installed it and forget about it.

I see a chip in the inner race of the bearing but dont know if it is an optical allusion (sp?). Otherwise it looks pretty clean.

That is not a chip. That is how they get the bearing in hte race for the captive/caged type that are that large. I have rebuilt a few SM465's and even a few NP435's (furd....) and they are all like that.

I don't know enough about it to say yes or no but take a look at his other post. There was some carnage that caused him to pull the tranny.

I think the shaft looks good. RUN IT!
The bearing retainer is usually one of the few things on a 465 that ever need to be replaced due to wear. Shaft looks good.
It looks a little blurry, but how is the pilot bearing surface? It certainly is different than the metal around it, but that may be from normal friction. If the surface is smooth and not ground down, I don't see anything wrong with that shaft.
I'd maybe rotate it just to make sure there is no obvious bend in it, it seems somewhat surprising it broke the way it did and no visual clue on the input shaft that I can really see.
