Plug Wars: Platium vs. AC Delco

Oh come on, has anyone actually changed cheap plugs for expensive ones and actually noticed a difference? I run AC Delco. I think the others are just a bunch of hype.

I use autolites. The reason I use them is because they are the only ones that I have found make race plugs for my firebird (heat range on them are 4 steps colder than stock) Eversince I starting using them I just have put them in all my vehicles. Before I ran the NGK v-groove. The autolites are cheaper, and they both perform the same. As for plat. plugs, if you car came with it from the factory use them, otherwise dont waste your money. Also for you nitrous guys you cannot run plat. plugs and N2O, it causes very bad backfires, and will melt the plugs. Thats what it says in the directions, and I know for a fact because my buddy tried it on his mustang, he didnt listen to me and said it would be fine. Melted 7 or the 8 plugs, and caught his K&N on fire.

I melted a set of Boch platinmum plugs too. I will never put them in another vehicle. I put a set in my old bronco with a very hot 300 6 cyl I built. About a month after I put them in it started missing. I pulled the plugs and the center electrode had melted completely away in some of the plugs and the ceramic insulator was cracked. On one plug a piece had fell out into the combustion chamber. Needless to say I was a little POd.
I usually run Motorcraft or Autolites. They are cheap and pretty much trouble free.

I was just surprised you couldn't find them. It isn't like it is a rare plug or hard plug to find.

Sounds like you have a detonation problem in your hot little 6 cylinder.

Ya, I was suprized also.. Advanced Auto Parts is the only place around that carries them here and they have a ton in stock except for the Chevy ones...

I use AC Delco rapid Fires and they work great. Ain't broke, don't fix it. The best mod I have made to my stock setup (305) was to replace the plugs AND wires. You should also inspect your cap to see if it needs replacing as well. I know some recommend going to a new ignition system (MSD, etc.) but either this month or last months magazine (damn, can't remember if it was 4Wheel & OffRoad or 4 Wheeler) compared a stock setup to 4 different ignition systems. I didn't look at the article too closely, but of the 4, only 1 outperformed the stock setup. I haven't found much of a need for an aftermarket ignition setup on a stock confirguration.

My recommendation.... get a set of AC Delco Rapid Fire plugs and good set of plug wires. Check your cap as well for replacement. This doesn't take much time (hour tops, if you spill the beer) and will make a noticeable difference in how your truck runs and idles.

Is this the writeup you were talking about? ; )

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?

Yes. Just from glancing at that write-up, I don't see much value or justified expense to going with an aftermarket ignition if mine is functioning properly. Should this be disputed? Or are there other factors that the ignition-naive folks (like myself) are not aware of?

IMNSHO, no, they aren't worth it. Properly tuned, a stock ignition setup is just as easy to start and idle. And with those test results, IMO, it proves that power itself, at least WOT, is not increased.

Two glaring problems with that "test" and article IMO though. One, the baseline was an Accel distributor which I know nothing about. Stock HEI replacement or??

Second, at the end of the second page "the test results are clear" comment. So what ARE the test results? They don't even offer their opinion. Based on that article, the clear result apparently is that they make no difference!

Personally, if I can get good mileage, and the power is there, I don't need to throw $150+ dollars at something that isn't going to improve my acceleration. I'd much rather save it for something thats been proven time and again, like better heads, better intake, etc.

When I last changed cap/rotor/wires, I went up one step and got a Summit coil that's rated at higher voltage (it's HEI, coil in cap). That made a big difference how the engine was running. I'm also using Bosch plugs (Bosch Super 7586), and they perform better that regular A/C's. Those seem to accumulate deposits a lot quicker. As I recall the ignition test, any differences of aftermarket over stock were only noticeable at high rpm. I for one get already nervous at 3500rpm....
