Thanks for entertaining me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Entertaining's my business and business is good! or was that killing?? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
One shaft in three years which is pretty good Cuz I have about 425HP 4.88 gears powertrax locker and 37" Mtr's and a TCI prepped 700r-4 /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif
axle bent durring roll over.
2 gov loc's
3 ring gears
2 pinion gears
1 open carrier
1 older posi unit for 10 bolt
I think thats it for now...
Ring and Pinion
bearing on the Carrier when out!
you need to add nothing i was smart and threw the 10 bolt or 12 bolt away and droped in a 14 bolt ff /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
no follow-up survey on why it happened the 2nd time? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
Pinion bearing, which in turn lead to ring and pinion......
12 bolt: Ripped the teeth off of the ring gear 3 times in 3 years. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
10 bolt: Pounded the hard facing off of the spider gears, which then chewed up the bearings. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Mini-10 bolt (S-10): Broke teeth off the pinion gear, with a weenie TBI 4.3L V6 and 30x9.50's! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I'm a big fan of 14-bolt FF's these days. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Where's the vote for "more than one of the above at the same time"?
My buddy blew the spiders out of the 12-bolt in my '66 C10. One spider split in two and as it fell clear of the case, the ring gear picked it up and pressed it out through the diff cover. I looked really neat /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
I welded the cover and back on it went /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
lets see... blew the 10 bolt govlok, snapped a 12 bolt housing clean in half (that's quality carnage folks!), blew 12 bolt ring/pinion (my own fault, thats what I get for setting up my own gears) broke a 12 bolt side gear...
All in all I'm pretty happy with my 12 bolt /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Someone replaced the pinoin seal without replacing pinion nut. Backed off on me while driving...dropped pinion into ring gear and carrier. Broke teeth on pinion and ring gear and ground chunks off the gov-loc.
well my 10 bolt has yet to break (its under alot of stress too, 2600lbs of truck on it, 27.5s and a whole whoping 1.8L isuzu pumping out 125hp and 150ft-lbs).
But i know a guy who busted a 10bolt front case clean in half on his /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
Non of the above for me. I had a seal go, and as I was in the process of changing it realized that the pinon screw had snapped, I thought about trying to remove it, however having a parts truck with 3/4 ton running gear under it, decide it was to make the swap.
Only thing I have broke on my 12 is the spiders. Blew them into tiny chunks and out the rear cover... got a spare set I had and welded them up. No problems after that! The following weekend I had the truck bouncing off the ground doing a hill with waterfalls(and heavy on the juice) and nothing broke... Thats when I stood it up on the spare tire!
I chose ring gear, even though it is impossible to tell if it was the ring or pinion that let go first. When they fragged it bent the mounting surface of my factory limited slip. JUNK! /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif
40" TSLs and a stage 2 shift kit did it for mudbogAD, jus forgot to let off the gas for the 1-2 shift and bang!
