The title doesn't really get my point across...

When you get parts from DIY4X or for instance the crossmember and engine mounts that I got from TNA they show up with a coating on them, like a thin film of hard grease or something which I assume is to prevent rust.

How do you get this stuff off, I used a wire wheel and it just kinda spreads it around.

What are you guys using to get this stuff off (besides sand or media blasting)?

Brake parts cleaner?

I think he is referring to the mill scale on the steel. Sand blast is about all that will take it down to bare steel.

Then acetone or brake kleen, or MEK. I don't know of a mechanical means of completely removing that.

Kert tumbles some of his stuff too, those parts only need a quick wipe.

You think gas woyld have the same effect on that stuff as it would on grease? Put some in a 5 gallon bucket and swirl it around a little.

That is what my dad does. Works ok. I prefer spray with brake clean. Then wipe with paint prep stuff. Grease and wax remover. Dry then spray. Holds up for years

I've always used DE-greaser, scrub brush and elbow grease then a quick wipe down with acetone or lacquer thinner and ya round or smooth all sharp edges with a flap disc to help prevent future slicing of my old flesh

Well, you know...

I do two step though. Acetone then wipe. Carb cleaner the wipe
Then fire!!!

Ok I'll stop now...
