Project cheap tow rig, 94 cummins...

I would not mess with the timing. This is usually done AFTER all kind of mods to the pump, injectors, and engine. It can help with smoking and give a little more power but that's only because you would have increased the amount of fuel being pumped to the engine with your other mods. Messing with the timing would just be used to advance when the pump started to pump fuel to each piston resulting in a more efficient burn. Doing it without increasing fuel flow alot first could be pointless. Go to 4bt swap forums and read up in there technical sticky. It's actually very impressive.

I have to disagree, bumping the timing on a 12 valve does make a noticeable difference to a stock or modded truck. Combine a timing bump with a 3 or 4k GSK kit and you end up with a 12 valve that is much much more responsive and a totally different truck to drive. With the exception of removing or at least modding the fuel plate, a timing bump is one the best free mods out there. But like I said with out increasing the governor limit ( GSK kit) the timing bump will not be fully usable if you are still de fueling at the stock ~2700 rpm.
To howdiy, if you have a decent diesel shop around , they could most likely do the timing for you for a somewhat reasonable price. Especially if you took the truck to them somewhat "ready to go" , ei trailer it there with the front cover already removed.
I had mine done as opposed to buying the tools , I took just the engine to them and ended up paying for just an hour labor, so for me it was a lot cheaper then buying the tools I may or may not ever need again.

It seems like advancing the timing moves the powerband to higher RPM, which is the same as a gas engine.

I don't really want this considering that I'm happy with the way it makes power now down low.

I think I'll just throw the 3k GSK in and call it a day. My truck defuels earlier than 2700 for sure, more like 2300.

I think a 5" exhaust and bhaf are in order.

My main goal is MPG while towing

It can move the power band once you start getting up there in advance numbers, but a bump to the 16-18 range will help with responsiveness. Plus it is common on higher mile engines for the timing to have slipped from the original 12.5* setting.

bump the timing to 15-16 degrees WILL gain you mpg. without question. Factory timing is set bearing with EPA emissions regs and other legislation. the factory does not set it to be optimal for mileage and end user satisfaction. if you go governor springs you will want to reset the timing. 100% to take advantage of the increased drivability.

see Gov spring kit and timing advance does not increase fueling at all. but believe me, it utilizes the availiable fuel way better. you'll notice a huge difference. and just bump your fuel plate forward a little bit. for some extra jam. it will be a whole new machine, you won't even believe it.

The PO put a fuel plate in and and its pretty quick as it is.

Since its all apart I'm going to see if I can get a trailer and take it to a shop to have them do the timing. Shouldn't be too much money

who ever you get in there doing it. make sure they're setting timing with plunger lift. and using the correct lift chart for the pump number.

Bed came off today, holes all filled in

Going to look at some 20" wheels and tires Saturday

I think I'm gonna make a gooseneck hitch

I think I'm going to get these wheels.

What color should I paint the truck?

I'm not looking forward to drilling all the holes

One side sorta done

Little more welding and 2 more holes in the frame

Then I'll drill the side holes down the road when the tires are off

5" exhaust sounds good :pimp:

I'm going to with these wheels about this size for a tire

And I'm going to do my front like the one shown, but with a white grill

Edit: another of the wheel, too blingy, I know
