Project Snow Bear K20!

Here's a fun note. The motor mounts in this truck had no bolt holding the halves together. LMAO. I drove this truck 270 miles home and thought it was a little "shaky" but didn't pay attention much. Pulling the engine and got under to pull the bolts from the motor mounts. Nothing there.... Took a pry bar and lifted it, yep. Nothing there...LOL so I guess that's one thing I don't have to do.

Great time for engine bay prep
My thoughts exactly. You can just barely see that I sprayed everything in the engine bay down with degreaser to get it loosened up. I'll Bring a hot pressure washer in to finish up the job. Still need to remove the master cylinder and steering box for the hydroboost and 2wd box while the engine bay is empty. I'll also be adding new battery boxes to both sides for a dual battery setup to run various accessories. Didn't get the chance to pull the bed today like I wanted but I did get all the bolts out so next time I fire up the dozer I will lift it off of there and carry it to the boneyard on the hill.

You don't mess around

I'm retired so besides the small home Leather work business I have, I need projects. Stuff to work on that I actually WANT to work on versus the normal farm stuff I do. But no, I like getting things done.

On a side note I found a set of one ton axles for the Snow Bear. I was exploring all these alternative one ton axles, looking at the differences good and bad. Then out of the blue a local buddy calls me needing money, offering a set of CUCV axles (Dana 60 and 14 bolt) for 800 bucks. I couldn't pass that up. I'll go get them next weekend.

That will be cool. I like service bodies on 4X4 trucks.

I'm having a friend and master fabricator build a rear bumper for me. It will have a barn door style tailgate with a tire carrier, hi lift and Jerry can mounts. I've also got an idea for an over cab rack that goes along both sides of the tool boxes. We are drawing up some plans now. I want the front of the truck clean, hidden winch, appearing and all party in the back. Like a Mullet...LOL

Decided to pull the trigger today on installing the Ford F-350 super 60's in the snow bear. Located a set of 4.10 geared axles today and should be picking them up tomorrow. This will be setup on a fabricated radius arm system and coil over shocks. I know this isn't the norm but I sort of like the idea and I'm not aware of one being built with the Ford one tons. So now I have to do it. Axles, front and rear were removed from a f-350 super duty with 4.10 gears and limited slip in the back. All of the stock brackets and links are still there and I will be using the rough stuff kit for the 05 up super duty trucks. Frame outriggers and coil over mounts will also be sourced from Rough Stuff. They seem to be leading the way in parts for this swap so I'm just going to order everything I need from them. All that should be left for fabrication and figuring is the trac bar mount, crossover steering and the coil over shocks themselves. This should give the snow bear 14" or more of up travel and have the ability to adjust lift and ride. It's a lot more involved than throwing a 60 in there but I feel like it's going to be a fun swap.

On a side note, while sourcing these axles I ran across a 4bt cummins. Now you guys know that I'm a diesel guy to the bone but had sort of committed to doing a 5.3L LS swap in this truck. So now I need some opinions. 4 cylinder diesel or 5.3L LS?

Diesel for sure! The axle swap will be cool.

I'm mildly concerned with RPM's....the little 4 cylinder diesel is a GREAT engine but power is under 2400rpm. Combine that with 4.10 gears and 1.1 ratio on the 4 speed and 37" tires, no Bueno. It was require an overdrive trans, which I don't have....or really want for that matter. The 5.3 would easily make that combo work with a powerband that loves that 3k-4K rpm range.

This thing went from “oh hey that’s neat” to “what the heck just happened here?”

:waytogo:

I think I might have asked you this before but where are you located? Your sig says Great Falls but your pics don’t look like great falls?

I'm actually about 50 miles east in the mountains. I just claim Great Falls as no one has ever heard of the little town closest to us. I live at about 6,000 ft in the little belt mountains.

I think I can make the 4 cylinder diesel work for my application. It would certainly be in my wheelhouse, I'm an ASE master diesel tech....LOL gas motors scare me anyway. I actually found two diesels today and bought both of the them for good measure. The Isuzu 4bd1T and a 4bt cummins....LOL given my choice to use it would be the 4bd1t. It's a pretty awesome little engine.

I bet I’ve heard of it... lol
