Project Snow Bear K20!

Did the starting fluid work!? Lol!

It did! I gave it a shot to get fuel pulled up through the fuel lines. I mainly used it clean the carb up a little before trying to crank it. It's cheap and I have a case of it, carb cleaner is twice the cost and half as effective. It fired right up and purred like a kitten, very surprising in that the plug wires look like they have been run through a food processor. I imagine with a tune up it would be a damn fine running truck. 4 speed shifts out well....I was impressed. Original owner must have been short as the seat is jacked up on 4x4 blocks and I could barely get my 220lbs ass in there to drive it home. That driveline brake comes in handy when the brakes don't work. I'm not going to mess with it yet, just got it back to the house. I do think all the parts for the brake system are behind the seat. So I may look at those and see what is there. Then rebuild the brakes possibly next week.

How cool is that! Looks to be in good shape? Love that year!

I was just in town and completely forgot the rest of the little parts to finish my damn SHIFTER!. I'm heading to the salvage yard to pick up a few small parts and look at a few things for new ideas. Cab is off on the bear, 4 speed is out and I am moving forward full steam with getting some parts mocked up, burned in and finished off. I need the drivetrain in to fully mock and build the cross member so I guess that's what needs to happen. Then I can start on the front suspension which is going to be the hardest part of the build. Everything else should fall in like little soldiers.

Somewhere on pirate some guy chopped off the top corner of the 205. Gained a few inches of clearance.

Worth a look to see if you feel like jacking with it. What's the exhaust plan?

The more I think about it I might try chopping off the 205. Basically because I can. I also think I'll try to make a plate to mount on the drivers side rear cover to give myself another point to connect the 205 to the frame or crossmember. I know someone makes one. I do need to find the batteries for my laser temperature gauge. To this point the upcoming build on the crossmember will be the break over point. It will be the basis for a few parts that I need to locate. Namely the rear mounts for the lower control arms.

I always find good ideas in the yard.
I have my belly made with factory flat crossmembers at 116" wb with 42s and I hit the hell out of it.
Tuck it up as high as possible

Short little trip into our local salvage yard today yielded some results. Found the other rear spring that I needed as well as a VERY nice set of high back vinyl seats from the same Superduty truck. It was just set out in the yard last week so everything is still in great shape. Both are home with me now. I got in the truck and did a little measuring, sat down and closed the door....had a smoke, really test drove them. Comfy and super firm. Yessir. I'll take them. Added addition of cup holders!

Forgot I took these pics.
First one is about as close as you can get to a 1,000.00 screw up. one more inch and it would have walked up onto my nv4500...I need to pay closer attention sometimes.

Second one is the frame minus cab. Dropped the crossmember out shortly after to let the transfer case and 4 speed go. I'm planning to get the tanks off so I can clean up a little and start from a clean slate. Rear springs and hangars are done so the rear axle is going in next.

I need to find a new tank switch and valve if any of you guys have a lead. Also need a lead on zinc primer in the spray can.

Tank switch is available new ac Delco still. No real feedback on the valves yet. I haven't fixed mine.

@ryoken has the skinny on primers.

Napa sells zinc chromate (brownish color) part #7222. Stuff's not good for you so wear a respirator when spraying.

Napa has all the tank selector stuff you'll need: Selector- mpf 32198, selector connector- crb 22199, and switch- ech fs500.

I have a couple gallons of the CARC phosphate primer, now that I think of it. Just need to find a pressure washer steam cleaner to get all the grimes and greases out of the way.

OK so I'm staring at the bare frame and planning a little before starting some fab work that I need to do and the one thing that still isn't solidified yet is placement of the rear PTO winch. Originally I had thought of placing it as far back on the frame as I can. That will interfere with a possible fuel tank swap. As I look at it, I am wondering why not locate it high under the bed right behind the cab? All that would be needed then would be to stretch the cable to the back and through a roller fair lead in the rear bumper. Might need to fab up a "hanger" or sorts to keep the cable up in place should it go slack at any point, possibly a tube for the cable to travel through like the Landcruisers had. It would certainly make the driveline for it shorter and thus safer. Possibly mounting it just before the rear axle rise. I'll know a little more when the rear axle but the only interference that I can think of would be on the rear driveshaft. Having the winch under the bed would allow me to put in an access panel to get to the winch should I need to. I'm liking this idea. There is a LOT of unused real estate back there. Thoughts and observations appreciated.

Also, just a thought that Mid mounting the PTO winch would allow me to brace it to hell and gone. Where a rear mounted setup would only allow me to get so crazy with the support. Bracing the mid frame area (where there is no bracing) should make the frame much more rigid.

Good idea. Just like oilfield winch trucks with the winches mounted behind the cab except you will have a service bed. Might even be able to do a removable A-frame off the back for lifting and moving things if you ever needed to.

I wouldn't have it protrude through the bed, just under the bed at that point on the frame versus all the way back next to the rear bumper. Not that it's a bad idea, I just don't don't know how I would use the winch for recovery from the rear without rigging some kind of snatch block at the rear bumper maybe? Need some more thought in this space for sure.
