and then nary a peep out of the damn thing while it runs. But turn the key off, turn her back on, squeals for I donno, 30 seconds or so.

Parts are all new, kit from PSC. Pretty dang sure the thing is bled, I've done it a bunch of times before, and the fluid in the reservoir isn't frothy or bubbly. Reservoir is highest point in the system.

I did repaint the pulley as it was nasty, so maybe the squealing is the belt slipping until it grabs? Sand the paint off the pulley? Belt doesn't look glazed and is relatively new (V-belt, not serpentine.)

Other thoughts?

Is it pump squeal/ wine or belt squeal?

Well, that's the proverbial $16M question. I can make a Youtube of it if you want your ears shattered :haha:

That it goes away so quickly makes me think it's not the pump, but :dunno: this is new by me.

You're looking at the wrong accessory. Its most likely your alternator. Put a large load on it to start the engine and with a loose belt it slips as the engine comes up to speed until it catches up. Watch your volt gauge while its squealing and if its low and then comes up to normal when the squealing stops that's your problem.

One trick I found was to use a spray bottle of water and squirt the suspect pulley while running a tiny bit. If the squeal goes away, you found the pulley that's squeeking.

i'm thinking it's the alternator pulley as well.

You might try rubbing some steel wool in the pulley grove to see if it might help.

If not, if you can't live with the squeal then you need a new pulley.

My .02cents.

The voltage gauges read normal, so I was still thinking PS issues, especially as that was what had been changed.

The problem started to get worse, squealing not just at idle/start but all the time, so I finally tore into it.

After removing all the belts and reinstalling them one at a time, checking alignment and tension, it was indeed the outermost one, the alternator belt. How many times do I hafta tell you guys that Occam's Razor applies to these trucks before I learn it for myself? :dunno: :doah:

Slapped a spare belt on and voila, nary a peep. The old belt shows no visible glazing, so I donno what was going on. I figure I'll try it for a while, see if the squealing returns, and at that point surface or replace the pulley as required.
