just helps to read everyting if you are going to reply is all

A small detail like mistaking Blue for Red Locktight is something that would have not even occured to me to reply to.

My only worry with using an open ended wrench is that I won't be able to push down and get much pressure on it. How hard is the metal the head is cast from?

I was able to drill and tap my head's water jacket easy enough (no, I didn't mean to go into the water jacket, lol) I used a pair of vice grips on the end of my tap, and a big open ended wrench on the vice grips for some leverage. Worked quite well!

that's your 1000th post, made EXACTLY at 1:00 PM... wicked creepy if you ask me :haha:

I went by advanced and ordered their brand that was supposedly equivalent. It'll be in at 4:00 this afternoon. Then maybe I'll be able to figure out how to make that tap go straight with vice grips, an open ended wrench, or better yet, perhaps I can jam in into a socket.

The parts store cross referenced me the wrong part number appearantly, because the stud I got has a hex head on it. I wasn't 100% sure that it was wrong, so I took it home tuesday. Tomorrow I'll get a refund, and I'm about to look up the phone numbers of several parts stores, maybe I will find one that carries the correct part num

yall are probably getting sick of this thread

I called around and found that car quest has a box full of the correct studs for .98cents a piece

About the whole too high of a lift cam theory, is there any way to test that and see?

update

I used a 1/4", 8 point socket with my tap and all went smoothly. Threaded in the replacement stud. I adjusted the valves with the motor not running (using the correct sequence). I put all the valves 1/2 turn past 0 lash. I was ABSOLUTELY AMAZED at how loosely everthing was adjusted. It really was a miracle that it ran at all. I still haven't had time to put my valve covers back on and crank her up. I'm swamped in work for college and am also sick with a sore throat. I've got a good feeling about all of this, I bet its going to run WAAAAAYYY better      I'll let yall know sunday or monday what happens. Thanks for all the help guys ;)

so I guess I shouldnt bust out my new gaskets out yet....... Do lifters really bleed that much? What will it do if its too tight? Does anyone have any pics of valves covers they have butchered for the purpose of adjusting valves? I have a set I just may take a cuttoff wheel to, if I can get some pics of how they are supposed to be cut correctly.
thanks

Don't worry, the lifter were old so they were already pumped up and they don't bleed down unless there is a bad lifter. When adjusted correctly you should have about 3 or 4 threads showing above the rocker nut, this is only an observation not a definate but you will get an idea if you went too far.

Yes they bleed out but it depends on how long its been since it has run. Basically you just cut them out so you can get to the nuts the less you cut the less oil you have everywhere. Use rubber gaskets then you can reuse them. When you cut them out don't make a hole just cut three sides then bend it out so it makes a deflector that is higher then the valve cover. I have seen pushrods that fling alot of oil before. You can even cut the covers down the middle and just split them open.

I guess I'll she how she runs first. If they are way out of adjustment, I'll just do it while the motor is running. I suppose I will be able to tell for sure when each valve is right before zero lash? it will be a distinct clacking/ flopping around of the rocker arm?

Yea get it running first, then do the loosen and tighten till stops clacking. You can also do it by touching the rocker and feeling it clack if its to hard to hear. When I do it I will loosen them way out that way you can hear the clacking then tighten till it stops the go 1/2 to 1/4 more do one at a time. Once you do a few you will get the feel for it.
