I have been looking at 5.13:1 ring and pinions, and the vendors only sell those gears in thick cut (the same with 4.88:1). I am just trying verify that I will need to buy a 4.56-down open carrier , or a 4.56-up carrier to work with thick cut gears.

4.10 / 4.56 is the ratio break so you need a 4.10 (or lower numerically) carrier.

To clarify:
in order to run a set of 5.13 thick cut gears I would need this open carrier

Motive Gear PN# 6258336 Application Notes
  • For GM 10.5" (14 Bolt)
  • 4.10 and Lower
  • Empty Case
  • Open
  • Use With Internal Kit GM14BI

Iirc, only GM makes the thin 5.13 and that’s why it’s so hard to find.

I am also thinking of going with a Yukon open carrier instead of a Motive Gear carrier. I have read a couple of not so great things about Motive Gear carriers being made of light weight metal, and having excessive run out that screws the ring to pinion clearance. The Yukons are more than double the price of the Motive Gears, but are supposed to be even beefier than the stock OE ones. Stock Spicer carriers for a 14-bolt are no longer available.

why not just buy a full case locker

I do not think a Full Case locker is made for the 14-Bolt. It looks like they make them for some diffs (like Dana-44 or GM 12-Bolt), but not the 14-Bolt. If there is such a thing then get me a part number because I cannot find one for a 14-bolt.
