Question about steering column

    This is probably a stupid question, but I need help determining where my problem is.
    When I turn on the key, the shifter drops into R or N. Once you get it in the gear you want, you have to hold it there or it will drop into the lower gears.

    Is this a problem with the column, tranny, or linkage?

    I'd suspect the detent ball in the tranny. Even with no lnkage hooked up you can feel each indivual gear as you move the shifter arm. Try disconnecting the shift linkage from the tranny (block the tires first...) the shift arm should not move freely. It should take a bit of effort to move the linkage from one gear to another...
