Hello everyone.

I’ve been reading about vehicle suspension systems but still have some questions. How do different types of suspension, like independent versus solid axle, affect ride comfort and handling? How do spring stiffness, shock absorbers, and sway bars work together to maintain stability?

What are the most common signs that a suspension needs repair or upgrading, such as noises, uneven tire wear, or poor handling? Are certain suspension setups better suited for city driving, off-road, or performance vehicles?

How do modifications to one component, like upgrading shocks, impact the rest of the system?

I’d love advice or examples from experience.

Well your questions need a whole book to answer.
But I will hit a few items that hopefully can get you what you really need.
Signs that you have issues with your suspension:
Shocks: tires are worn in spots not continously, like they are chopped.
Vehicle bounces repeatedly after hitting rough road.
Bushings and ball joints: clanking noises and lose suspension feeling.
Uneven tire wear.
Tie rods: wobble or wandering.
Springs: uneven stance.

City driving definitely independent suspension is better overall.
Smooth suspension is more about the springs than the axles, independent or solid axle don't really contribute much.
Coil springs are the easiest to make a smooth suspension, leaf springs can be smooth but not as good as coils.

A swaybar connects both sides of the suspension to reduce the amount of difference in movement between sides.

Shocks stop the Bouncing from continuing after the initial hit.

If you change one item of a worn suspension it could improve the performance but could also accentuate the problems that still exist.
Example if you have a loose suspension and you change the tie rod it might show more movement on worn bushings since it's not absorbing the slack.
