The 1/2 ton '90 and '91 will have the 700r4 which does have OD. They actually started the 700r4 years before, can't remember when, but for your purposes the 1/2 tons will be the 700r4. The '90 3/4 ton will have the Th400. The '91 3/4 ton could and should have the 4L80e but I think there may have been some with the Th400 so if you find a '91 just make sure it's the tranny you want.
As for your original question about the small block I have a '90 3/4 ton with the TBI 350, Th400, 4.10 gears and 35" tires and it does OK around town. When I get into the mountains things get a bit more difficult. It'll still pull the passes but at not much more than 55 mph between 2nd and 3rd gears. 4.56s would help that.
In your first post I'm not sure what you mean by the small blocks are easier to find. If you mean a Sub with a small block that's all you'll find in that body style and 4 wheel drive. You could get a big block in the 2 wheel drive versions. The big block and 4 wheel drive appeared in the '92 3/4 ton model.
