Ram now has a light diesel

Nice. But V6 diesel? :dunno:

Hope GM jumps on the bandwagon. Need an I4 diesel in cars and bring back the S10 and toss one in there. Guess depending on power output it could go in the 1/2 tons as well, I mean they have wee6s in there.

GM has the Cruze diesel now which has a very slight edge in fuel economy over the Jetta. We got a Jetta, but we may have looked into the Cruze had they been around yet. My wife has a really long commute and that Jetta saves our ass on fuel. She wanted a Grand Cherokee but it would have killed us on fuel, she may get a diesel one in a few years...

I just think, if you can get 40 some odd mpg from a car why not 30 in a light truck or SUV? Why is Chrysler figuring this out first and not GM??

It does seem like inline motors make better torque so I'd agree. How about a nice 4.0l inline 6 diesel for LTs and SUVs?

"Although final EPA estimates aren’t available, Chrysler did announce that it expects highway fuel economy in the high 20s."

Why haven't any of the big three figured this out in the last 30 years. This is what everyone has wanted forever.

Oh, and for the Cruze, I didn't even knew they offered a diesel in a car. Just showed the wife, she's been looking at cars since she drives a bajillion miles a month. She thinks it's small, who just bought one recently.

Because it's diesel, it's a dirty word. The environmentalists don't like it cause you can SEE it everywhere, while gas just affects the atmosphere lol

Its because of profits...you want a diesel, get a HD truck...big profit margin.
The big 3 were all offered the new 5.0 cummins, it took Nissan to build a new Titan truck for it to make it fly....which are made in USA as well. I think those will sell like hotcakes

Its been known for years by consumer's and the Europeans . ALL cars manufacturers selling cars in the US have just pushed it off as long as possible.

Im glad Audi and VW dont give a flying F..... I hope it works out.

I did ask a big wig at Ford why they haven't invensted the time and offered diesels in samplers cars and trucks in the US.

His answer was pretty much "why would we?

Well I think consumers are starting to figure it out. There are TDI Jettas everywhere I look, including our driveway...lol If more people tried driving diesels they would sell even more. Fun to drive, awesome fuel economy, no complicated hybrid system. I keep wondering how much it will be to replace batteries in all these hybrids.

Obviously the HD pickups are selling well and people love those diesels. But we all don't need to tow 25000 pounds. I just want a large SUV that gets decent mileage.

Plus, imagine the mileage you could get from a really bare bones diesel car. Right now the only diesel options are trucks and premium cars. I bet an econo-box with a diesel could smoke a hybrid.

Right now I have a TDI Golf and an electric Chevy Volt. They both have positives and negatives. But for a commuter car, the electrics have a big advantage. Less cost to operate being the largest. Less maintenance being another. The volt still gets 36-40 mpg on the highway if you run nothing but the gas generator on a long trip. The cost of the battery packs are inline with rebuilding a modern automatic transmission on a gas car at the moment but continue to go down as more are built. There are many people with 150K+ miles on their Chevy Volts with no major repairs to date. The battery packs are not failing like originally predicted by the naysayers.

GM is more invested in the electric car with options to extend the range than old tech like the diesel cars. GM is also sponsoring a collegiate competition to convert a Chevy Malibu to an electric car and see if the colleges can come up with any innovative ideas. I would not be surprised if it is hard to find a manufacturer selling a combustion car by the end of this century.

One of the biggest negatives to the electric vehicle is the lack of infrastructure in charging stations. But, it is growing and will eventually not be much of a restriction (likely to take more than 50 years from now though).

would be cool to see a LD diesel…V6, V8, whatever, around 25-30mpg…and a sweet torque curve right off idle

THEN release the motors onto the market as a standalone conversion, kinda like the e-rod motors a few years back.

We have a gas Cruze and I wish it had more room but its not bad, the wife loves it and gets awesome fuel mileage.

On a recent trip we had me, the wife, my sister, and her husband in the car and we averaged around 31mpg at 500-525 miles to a tank if you run it to the light(which we dont, she fills it up at the 1/4 mark).

The car handles like a sporty car and rides very good. The gas motor is surprisingly very peppy for being a 1.4liter four popper.

I guess non of you have heard that GM is coming out with a LD diesel in the Colorado and Canyon models in late 2014 or early 15. They have had them for years as the motor is an Izuzu. They've probably been having a hard time screwing them up to pass the US emissions. Even the diesel Cruze requires DEF!

Yes I heard the Colorado is getting an I4 duramax. If it's not outrageously priced I'll swap up the daily driver to a loaded 4 door.

I think cummins overshot the 1/2 ton market with the 5 litre v8 that Nissan picked up. Too big for a halfton. It needs a solid v6 turbo diesel, not a v8.

Ford doesn't need it. Dodge didnt want it (they already offer the 1/2ton diesel ram in house engine) and well with Chevy I think will be tough to break into their LS dominated 1/2ton market. And if they do it'll be an inhouse Isuzu you can bet that.

If the Nissan Titan wasn't such a piece of **** of a truck it might do well.

The Colorado/canyon diesel has been rumored for years. For Chevys sake I hope they get a new model out before the Tacoma gets redesigned.

I'll believe it when it's on the lot.

What I would much rather see is a tdi Amarok. I have only had my vw since September, but I love that little car.

The Colorado diesel has been availiable all over the world for many years already. Just not here. It's no black magic, just those assholes controlling the North American market. Same as a Ford Ranger diesel, been availiable for DECADES but never in North America.

Why?!?

Because assholes.

That's why.

i wouldnt want any new diesel rig with DPF, DEF, and SCR's on all this stuff, i work with these things everyday, ill take an old 12 valve or 6.2 with a banks turbo any day.

I don't think I have any of that crap on my vw? I think it's only the big domestic stuff that's affected.

Depends on the year Of the engine. They all have it now. In one form or another. Those that run DEF push ALOT less egr and that's way better for the engine.

2013, I don't have to add any of that stuff to the fuel :dunno: I'm not all that familiar with those newer things.
