rebuilt my first th400 today!!!

Glad to hear it went well! I have a few that need rebuilding, and I plan on doing them myself because I can't afford to pay a trans shops the kind of money they want. I think its one of those things that I'm intimidated about, but once I do it a couple of times I'm going to wonder why I didnt do it sooner.

What special tools am I going to need?

a 1/4 drive 3/8 12 point socket and a slide hammer really helps to pull off the pump.

then the afore mentioned wire to drop in the first heavy custer.

oh and if you pull apart the pump to replace the front bushing you need a pump alignment tool, also knows as a really long/wide hose clamp. well long enough to go around the pump, around 12" diameter.

AFTERTHOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

the tranfer case originally on the trans i have here had a 208 on it.
does it have the right output shaft for a fig8 205? how bout a round 205?
im gonna be pissed if i have to take this bish apart to change output shafts!!!

The figure 8 205s usually require 4 1/2 inches (give or take) of transmission output shaft stick out.

the true test comes when you install it. thats why i never attempted it. id hate to have done hours worth of work then putting it in to find out i screwed something up

im pretty confident, i think it was done right.
does anybody know where that ouput shaft diagram was posted that listed what tcases went on it? i have just the one where it shows how long it is.

Congrats !!!

I love to read threads like this one !!

I cut my teeth on T-350's and T-400's ....learned both by myself...reading up on them..buying the kits and diving in !!! best way to learn....

I even built a few tool of my own....you know that spring loaded apply piston in the bottom of the case ( first/reverse ???) it has a snap ring holding it in place before you slip in the output shaft ? I made a tool out of a 3" PVC cap and and a 3/8 threaded rod to compress the springs...worked like a champ.

Once you build a few of them you will get a feel for the stronger/ better parts. If you ever find a T-475 for sale , buy it !! ( used in heavy duty vehicles / Motor homes ) they make an excellent trans for our 4x4's ( straight cut gears on the planatary's stronger sprag units, etc)

Oh,, And don't forget the BOLT ON THE CENTER CARRIER !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrestled with my first one for an hour before I realized it was there !:doah::rolleyes:

nice, very cool tool.
and i had no idea there was a 475, did the cucvs have those?
how can i identify one from the outside?

yeah i have that picture but somewhere along the line i saw that tcase compatibility was put on there as well. somebody used MS paint and just sorta labeled the shafts.

ive been looking and cant find it anywhere.

this is the one i was thinkin of, apparently 85+ uses the same shaft.
ill need to build a round pattern 205 for this trans.

just wanted to share the EASE of doing this yourself, ive got less than five hours in the trans and tcase bench time. very doable on an ambitious saturday. thanks for sure to the ck5 member for some awesome tech articles!

I just noticed you have a sealed bearing on the input of your NP205. Do you have a part number?

so i just it installed, filled, buttoned up, and got to test drive it today....

IT MOVES!!!!!!!

im so excited! it was definatley a bitch to do it as this truck is much lower than the K5. had to change over to a round pattern tcase and crossmember, and that cause me to do some serious exhaust massage. PTO interference and it rubbed the oil filter. also rubs on both sides at the shackles. although it was the PO, cant seem to get any good work done around here.
changed the motor oil as well as the rear diff and damn its cold here, the gear oil was like maple syrple.
i got to back it out of the driveway and drive it 100 feet. i forgot that i lowered it and didnt adjust the steering, so right turns only. lol

so thats the good news!
