Just trying to understand if this is a Jasper, GM, Powertrain Products, etc motor. Mainly trying to understand the HP and camshaft duration etc.

All I know is that it was ordered from a local auto parts store and is a crate 350.

I noticed this plate near the oil filter and it has the popular 270 casting block# which tells me it’s at least a 4bolt main.

Unfortunately I’ve learned to assume that GM casting numbers don’t mean a thing.

You can get com cam numbers if you are careful, and the only way to know what is actually in it is to take it apart

The donor truck I bought for the 454 in my crew cab was supposed to have a Jasper engine in it. When I pulled it, I found these:

The reman engine I bought from ATK for the C10 had these on it:

All the reman engines should have the round "tattle-tale" device stuck to them so if there's a warranty claim they know if the engine was overheated.

Looks like its a VEGE reman engine. I noticed the plaque in the same place as pictured on one of their engines. So I imagine its a VC-12 (4bolt).

Just curious, why is the 4 bolt thing so important to you?

4 bolts are just more desirable to build on. Because these Gen 1 blocks are not as strong with splayed main caps, the more bolts the better IMO. Not so big of an issue on the Big blocks as they have a more robust casting/webbing.

Was just asking because I’ve never had an issue with a 2 bolt even up to 500hp

in a small block? Not saying you will but its just luck of the draw. If you had the option between the two, i dont know why one wouldnt opt for a 4 bolt

yeah that appears to be a Goodwrench replacement block. See Hecho in Mexico on it anywhere ?

hard to say could be a roller tappet or flat tappet engine. It does have a 1 piece rear main seal. my guess would be some where around 200-220 hp optimistically

it's for sure a roller block but may not be equipped with a roller cam or lifters.

So i did a compression test and the motor did really well. I bore scoped the cylinders and it has some SpeedPro Hypereutectic H580CP pistons. I have some white smoke on accel, so I’m prob going to have to change the valve seals.

Does anyone know where I can get a new air cleaner breather insert? See pic.

I have really dived into this truck. I like that it’s simple to work on, parts are cheap and available, plenty of space to work. Some day ill do a build thread.
