Rustoleum paint job advice needed

Its a dewalt palm sander...I was thinking about starting out with a 400 grit, then going to 600, then priming, then wet sanding the primer with a 600 grit...think that would be alright? And what grit should I use between coats of paint? I'm leaning towards rustoleum satin white now .

If it's just gonna be an offroad toy then "perfect" shouldn't matter. I can see getting rid of the rust, but why spend hours upon hours on prep work just for a toy that'll probably get scratched the first time out? I say get rid of any rust, sand it down smooth, primer it and hit it with 4 or 5 light coats of rattle can paint. I would suggest you using one of those rattle can handle things with a trigger. Your index finger will thank you after 10 minutes. post up some pics when your done.

I agree, just wondering what grit sandpaper to use to prep before priming.

Jus use 600 for the ruff stuff and then wet sand with 800-1000 til its smooth. Ive been using Filler Primer. It requires a lil more sanding but it helps fill in any lil imperfections.

Again, if it's just a beater toy, I wouldn't even sand between coats until the last one then seal it all in with a clear overcoat. Are you painting it piece by piece or all at once?

Might be a good idea to do a little bit at a time to see if I like it first. What do you suggest? Have you done this, got any pics?

Mine is a project beater that I might get rid of soon so I'm not worrying about it right now. It was rattle canned flat black over the OG paint when I got it and haven't changed it. I did rattle can the flakey white top gloss black. I also sanded down the hood and hit it with some flat black. I think before I sell it I'll sand down the body and rattle can it gloss black. If I do I'm gonna do it one body peice at a time. I haven't done it yet because of the minor body work I need to do and I've been working on the interior. I just herculined the tub and was thinking about hercing the lower part of the body. Anyway, if I do, I'll take pics if you will!

I'm also looking for another 73-75 in really good condition for my wife. That one needs good paint!:D:D:D

Yeah, my game plan is to do a fender and see how I like it first. If it turns out bad I can just scrap the fender. I'm sure it will turn out fine though.

Update from my weekend of "work"...Took the fender off and did some bondo work, sanded it down good, primed and painted. Here is a pic after about 3-4 light coats of paint. I decided to go with rattle can rustoleum gloss white, then I'll put a clear coat enamel on it. It actually is turning out better than I expected!

No clear coat on it yet...That is just after a few light coats of paint.

Update 2/9/08

Just wanted to update this thread real quick. Ended up borrowing a spray gun from a buddy of mines dad who does paint and body work (Ditched the rattle can). After a weekend of sanding and prep work we finally put the first coat of primer on tonight.

Its rustoleum white primer, works pretty well. Will be hitting it with a little sanding tomorrow evening and then another light coat of primer. Anyway, here is a pic, sorry- blackberry quality. I'll keep updating as I go.

Looks good so far. This makes me want to speed up the process and paint my truck LOL

Two coats of primer and five topcoats later I finally removed all the tape and masking today and I'm real happy with how it all turned out, although I'm not 100% done quite yet. I'm going to let the paint harden for a few days, hit it with 1500 grit and then use polishing compound and buff away! Anyway, here is a pic from today.
