My trans just refused to shift into reverse after a 90 mile trip just now. This trip involved 10 miles of dirt and mud road going up hill. After not getting reverse, I tried forward gears and nothing. I pulled the dipstick and the fluid went from pinkish brown to brown. I saw some black in there too. I turned her off for 5 minutes and I was able to get all my gears again, although reverse was slugish in the mud.

Any ideas folks?

Just a little warning;

I've seen a tranny drain/fill be the death blow for a worn trans.

Unfortunately, I don't see a way around it. If it was mine, I'd get a filter kit for it and a case of trans fluid. then swap all the fluid and filter out.

If it's still slipping after that I'd start looking for another one unless you feel like you can handle a rebuild.

Is the TV cable set correctly? If not that will burn up a 700R4 quickly.

Unfortunately it sounds like it's a little to late to be worried about that. Sounds like you're going to be installing another trans THEN make sure the TV cable is SET correctly.

My guess is you overheated the scrap out of it in 10 miles of dirt/mud uphill. Seems silly, but i got my 4l80e super hot going up a grade in chain controls.

Drain, refill, change filter, cross fingers. It is a toss up though, that might kill it.

You are living on borrowed time. Make plans to rebuild or replace.

FWIW, I overheated a TH350 4wheeling, it lost reverse on the trail, but regained reverse after cooling off. It lasted 3 more trails that week and I had it rebuilt when I got home.

I had an old 84' K5 and my 700r4 locked up on me when I was exiting the freeway. Came to a stop, light turned green, gave it gas, felt like I was hung up on a rock.

Tried shifting, it just wasn't happening. I knew it was really effed when the reverse lights were on when it was in park, and whenever I would give it gas to try and get it to move, it would slam and lurch and then spool up again.

I parked the truck for a week and it worked after, so I continued driving it, untouched, for another 6 months before I sold it.

Over an hour later and it shifts good, but the fluid is effed. I will replace fluid tomorrow and see how she does. Its 700 mile back to GA. I just need her to hold up. I have another 700R4 with about 60000 miles in my garage.

thats gonna be the longest 700miles of your life:eek1:...your lucky when mine burnt up it didnt work no matter how long it sat, it was just toast

Its gonna be a couple weeks before I can go home. We'll see what she does. I believe its the mud thats caked up on the transcooler that caused her to overheat. I've been driving to and from this site for a week with lots of mud on my truck.

I would guess its the dirt/mud uphill runs where your torque converter is constantly slipping for long periods of time.

Not a fix, but that'll get you 700 miles.:D;)

You know, I always used to say that almost anything could be fixed with the right tool, information and enough money.
I even repaired a blown light bulb on a bet. Looked weird, but it worked.

But I am beginning to think your whole drive-train is hexed.
Is this the same setup that keeps swapping fluids between the transmission and the transfer case?

J.

If your seeing black, thats burnt up clutch material....very bad as others have stated. Try not only changing the fluid in the pan with a new filter, but also disconnect the lines from the cooler, and flush all the fluid out by pouring new fluid in the dipstick, and letting it push it out the cooler line. If its got that hot, you might milk it home with the few recommended above band aids.

maybe install a temp gauge for it? that way you can notice if its getting hot on the way home and shut her down, let it cool off and try it again to make it all the way? Just an additional thought. i fear the 700r4in my k5.

I had one years ago that got hot going down the freeway pushing a big head wind. Blow fuild out the vent, smoke was so bad behind me you couldn't even see the freeway. Flushed it serviced it and it keep going. So if you flush it out real good it might make it home.

X2! Everyone with a 700r4 should have a trans temp gauge installed. I installed one in the cluster down in that unused hole, I has come in very handy at times. It has assured me that I can put my foot in it at times when I thought I shouldn't, and it has also let me know when I need to back off. I now feel completely comfortable having a 700r4 in my Burb.

How did you tap into the trans? Inquiring minds wish to know (aheam, me at least, maybe the OP). Just oil pan or?

There is a port that's plugged off on the driver's side about half way up. That's where mine is.
