Shock mounting- through tub?

Interested in the math that shows why a 12" travel shock has to come through the bed, since I have 12" travel Bilsteins on the stock mounts. I understand why coil-overs would need to come through the tub, so it that the real purpose here: to make the coil-over mounts now? I've seen 14" shocks inboarded under the bed. It is about having just a couple inches of lift?


What Eric said. My shocks are 35" extended and 22 compressed.

That pocket of space behind the rear seat is pretty out of the way, go for it. Think about how to box it in from the beginning, sometimes it's easier to make a thing harder so that the panels around it are easier or just cleaner to see and use.

When guys mount them at like a 45 degree angle under the body it really kills the effectiveness of the shock. Ideally you want the shock mounted as close to vertical in the travel path of the suspension. Also it helps with stability and ride quality the farther outboard from the center of the axle they can be mounted since in a solid axle the center of the axle housing is essentially the pivot point for the wheel travel also.
 
So I will eventually link the rear. Hence the reason I bought coil overs instead of smoothies. I will most likely go with the Scott's /truckmans design for this year, then next year tie to the cage for the wishbone or 4 link.
 
I'm still wondering why all these 12 & 14 inch shocks protrude thru the bed so high, I've got 14" and they only go thru about 8". I made some removable bed pieces to mostly seal it up and make removing a little easier then I plan to use some kind of leather boot to finalize it , right now I just use some gorilla tape to make the boot.
As far as safety I trust MY welding and they have 5 years of solid abuse to back it up with zero issues. And no the bar going across does not bother or even get touched by peoples legs.
