Slow cranking starter blues

sweet I needed a new starter, 97 S10 4.3 got it.
97 up 4.3 V6, i.e. anything from 97 (possibly earlier, but I know for sure 97 because my buddy did a V8 swap into his 97 S-10 and he used the V6 starter) up to the last year the S-10 was made (2004, IIRC).

When you get the starter make sure it has the small heat shield over the solenoid. Also, make sure the nut and star washer are present on the main power terminal - the ones on your old starter won't fit. If any parts are missing just call S-10 warehouse and let them know. Their customer service has always been first rate for me. One more thing, don't try to really crank down that main terminal nut - just snug it up. If you lean on it too much the resin it is molded into will break. Ask me how I know :doah:.

EDIT: Here's a linky for ya: http://tinyurl.com/yalxrd

also... new motor... did you paint it? if you painted the starter pad on the bottom of the block, it wont get proper ground, and wont want to turn over very well. what about the other grounds? make sure they've got good contact to bare metal, and not a painted surface. ran into this very same thing on a latemodel chassis that had just been powdercoated. guy failed to strip the locations of the grounds for proper connection, and it woudlnt turn over. remove ground wires, properly attached grounds, win the b feature on a brand new car.

You stated that you haven't even run this particular motor yet. Is there a possibilty that you have the sucker timed WAY too advanced? That can cause hard starts.

get your ass back in the lounge! no more technical stuff out of you! (btw, that makes perfect sense :haha: )

1. First thing I will swap batteries

2. Find remote starter switch and try the stuff mentioned earlier

3. Timing? Well I set #1 at top dead center and put dizzy in normal as it was in other motor, turned harmonic balancer to 0 degrees, rotor pointing just past #1 since at TDC it would have already fired. Is there a way to set timing without the motor running??

4. No paint on the boss that the starter attaches to. I will pull the grounds and grind to bare metal to check grounds. I have grounds going from frame to body, frame to motor, body to motor. Negative battery cable goes to alternator bracket and out of another hole in the bracket is my ground from motor to frame. (Maybe I should change those to directly to engine?)

THE STARTER DOESN'T TURN ANYWHERE NEAR FAST ENOUGH TO FIRE THE ENGINE AND THE SPEED NEVER CHANGES. :mad: :mad: I will try the above mentioned stuff and see what that brings. Thanks.

Hey Duane, one other thought;
Pull the plugs, and unhook the hot wire from the dist.
Now, try turning it over.
Does it spin a bunch faster now????
If it does, then I would say that the motor is just tight. Did the clearances on the motor get set to the tight side or the loose side?
