how do you take the stick shift off? thanks gurus
first make sure the tranny is in neutral. remove the rubber boot. you will see a metal ring around the shifter socket on the top loader. push the ring down and twist counter clockwise, the shifter should be free. some you can get with bare hands, others you may need to grab with a large pair of channel locks. if you take it out and the tranny is in gear, you will have a hard time putting it back in, you will need to re-align the shift forks with a screwdriver of some sort, and start again.
to take just the shifter out, the round cover at the base of the shifter, push down and turn counter clockwise. and then you can remove it. make sure it is in neutral first.
thanks alot gurus
sometimes have to use big pliers to make the spring loaded cover turn, some are tight/stuck,
SM420 handle removes same way BTW
