well my exhaust is pretty much a giant pile of crap. The PO used mismatched parts and pipes and did just about the worst welds i have ever seen.
So this left me with an extremely loud exhaust with multiple leaks.
I do not have the money to get my exhaust done at any of the shops around here (they're all quoting 550+) So i decided to look elsewhere.
I found a setup that i like in the lmc truck catalog for a pretty decent price. the only thing is that lmc says its for years 73-79.

My question is, if it fits 73-79 would it fit my 82? :dunno:

The list number it 36-5586.

and sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot. I'm kind of new here.

What are you working with now? True duals or y-pipe to single? Headers or manifolds? Cats?

What is the ultimate goal? Just an exhaust that works? Want or need true duals?

Stock engine or built engine?

The stuff listed in the LMC catalog fits up to 79 or so because they stopped doing factory duals at some point, plus the floor pan changed about that time.

In most cases the stock replacement y-pipe to single 3" system will flow more than enough for a stock or even mildly built engine, assuming a typical small block up to 400 cu inches. So, if you just need a decent and inexpensive exhaust, a replacement stock y-pipe and cat back exhaust with a decent muffler will sound good and do the trick. And the stuff is available through your local parts store.

Right now im working with no cats and duals dumped before the axle, and stock manifolds but i have some edelbrock manifolds i was wanting to put on. The PO said that engine had a mild cam and aftermarket oil pan.

i have some pics (sorry for the bad quality) that show a glimpse of what im working with and i can take more if necessary.

you mentioned a y pipe. does anyone know where i can get one for a good price?

i also noticed when i went under and took the pics that my rear seal on my trans case was leaking. is there any way i can replace the seal while its still in the truck? or do i need to take the whole thing out and just rebuild it. (pic included)

that seal either gets pushed in from the outside, or from the inside. Either way, it can be left in place. Just take the tail cone off if it goes in from the inside.

That seal is replaced from the out side. Chock the wheels, remove drive shaft, remove seal, replace seal, etc.

I would think any local parts store that carries replacement exhaust parts (like Walker for example) should be able to order a stock replacement y-pipe. A y-pipe will connect to both of your manifolds and connect down to one pipe, effectively turning your dual exhaust into a single system. From there you would just need the front pipe, the tail pipe and a muffler. A short piece may be needed in place of the cat which is no longer on your truck but was there when new (and technically speaking should be there, but that's a whole 'nother discussion).

It sounds to me like the local exhaust shop wants to cut off what is there and start over. And doing that means they want it done right by not using any of the existing hackery. $500 plus isn't out of the ordinary for a dual set up. I want to say I paid $300ish for my single exhaust and it was all custom made, no prebent or stock replacements and a Flowmaster 50 series muffler.

You have to decide how much you want to pay and what work you can do yourself. And what type of exhaust you want on the truck.

Well i went to two shops and they said that it would be that same price whether i ran dual or single

i checked my local parts store and the cheapest i could find the y pipe for is 180.

im thinking i may just run with the y pipe idea or possibly check another shop and see how much they would quote me on a single exhaust because if its 300 thats a reasonable price for me.

And thanks for the help guys. i was wondering if the 25 bucks would be worth it and i can already tell that it was.

Maybe if you removed all of what is there and installed the y-pipe, that would save $ at the shop. Less work that they have to do really.

I had a custom Y pipe made for the headers I put on my truck, and that was $200. I also put on a single inlet dual outlet muffler, and the tailpipes for that was $220. If you go to a reputable muffler shop, talk with them and tell them exactly what you want and you should be fine. Obviously, you are running the stock manifolds so if you can find a Y-pipe for less than they are making it, then go for it.

It should fit, but depending on how much he wants and how bad your exhaust is, could be good idea or bad.
If your exhaust is good, you just need to add turns to the sides, could be done for about $50.
