So, just how strong can a TH350 be built? And when does it out weigh the cost of an upgrade to a TH400?

Depends on how much money you want to spend. And how it's going to be used.

If it's rebuilt with good qualitly parts, and by someone who knows what they are doing, then they can last a decent ammount of time.

What do you plan on doing with the rig? Rocks, Mud, DD, Trails? What size tire? How much power? Even what kind of rig. A buggy will be a lot easier on a Th350 than a Suburban.

I plan on putting a Th350 behind the 454 in my Camaro next summer. But that only see drag strip time.

i like built 350s over a 400 anyday, im sure theres tons of opinions, but the 350 i believe transfers the power so much better and can be built VERY strong. from everyone ive met a 400 is kind of a drag on the truck, the 350 is a better option in my opinion. and as for the cost. u can make a 350 stronger then a stock 400 very easy and for cheap.

I've been running a rebuilt TH350 in my truck for the past six years. Been in mud, rocks and even ran the roads for a few years too.
I like em.....Shorter, lighter, easier to find, and a whole lot cheaper to build than a TH400.

My Blazer is more of a do everything kind of truck. But, rocks would be lowest on the list of things I do.

As posted above, I too am a a fan of the TH-350, I ran a stock one of unknown origin for about 3 years before I smoked it, had it rebuilt for $400 and it has been running strong for the last 5 years. I swapped tail shafts on it during the rebuild to run a 241 transfer case and have really liked the setup
