Well we had everything hooked up (we thought). The truck turns over but thats it...I need to know what to look for. I am guessing this could be electrical, the distributor needs to be turned, or the plugs aren't getting a spark. What do you guys think? Anything else or ways to check what I've mentioned? Also waler is leaking from where the water pump is so it looks like I get to tear off all of those brackets to do that all over again :doah: Pretty rough day, thought it would have atleast started for us. Well anyways feedback always helps so please put in your 2 cents!

What engine? Carburetor or fuel injection (if so, what kind)? Any aftermarket ignition boxes or just a distributor?

Sorry for the lack of info. Just put in a rebuilt 350. Carbureted with no special ignition box just a distributor the year is a 1986

Start with the basics, air, fuel, and spark. Easy enough, then go from there. Does it act like it wants to start but won't? Does it just spin freely with no change in sound? What's it doing?

Do you have spark? Did you try pouring a little gas into the carb? When my vehicles sit too long without starting I have to do this to help get the fuel pump primed.

Yes it just keeps making the sound...Cant really type out the noise but it is the ruh ruh ruh ruh type sound over and over. We were using starter fluid down the carb...How do I check for spark exactly? BTW the truck was running before we pulled the 305 so most basic components that just bolt on SHOULD be working if this helps...Thanks Guys! My dad said to check for spark and my brother said to turn the distributor because the timing may be off so much that it wont start...

For spark, pull a plug wire and hold it close to a ground on the motor while cranking it, head, bracket, or even the plug. Be prepared to get a shock if you hold it too close to the end of the wire. Sticking a phillips screwdriver in the end of the wire and holding the shaft close to the ground will reduce chance of shock.

On that note, double check that you have the wires on correctly.

Look down the carb, NOT WHILE CRANKING, and work the throttle on the side of the carb. Do you see fuel squirting out?

If you have both of these, then mess with the timing at the distributor. You can keep it loose enough that you can turn it. If you don't have a timing light, turn it back and forth while cranking to see if it fires or at least sounds like it's trying to.

Great Response thanks! Hopefully I will get it started tomorrow so I can get all the vacuum lines correct and then I get to take it apart to redo the water pump great :pimp:

Careful checking spark, that will deff sober you up if you get lit up. Knocked me clean off of the bumper one time. Have you checked to make sure your not 180 out of the dizzy? If the sparked and ran before, and you didnt drop anything, I would check to make sure you timed it correctly.

^ Good note. I had that one stump me once for a couple days when I was younger.

Make sure the rotor is pointing to the same spot on the cap where the #1 plug wire is connected when the motor is at TDC on Cyl 1.

The distributor is not timed correctly....We basically just stabbed it in so I will have my dad turn it while cranking it tomorrow and when it gets to the correct position it will fire up? Also I have never checked for spark before so I will definitely let my dad do that or youtube it lol

We did it blindly...does this mean i should pull the distributor completely and restab it correctly or just turn it to the correct position (excuse my ignorance on cars...this is my first project)

Yes,you will have to restab. Get #1 to tdc on comp. stroke, look at timing tab to verify that the mark is at zero on the balancer. Then restab dizzy you may have to use a long screwdriver to re-position the oil pump drive. Make a mark on dizzy were #1 pug wire goes and when you stab make sure the rotor is pointing at that mark. Do a little youtube search and you will be able to find plenty of videos on how to do this.

Livid, from what I am hearing here, I think we need to back up a little farther for him.

Will, do you understand that there are two times the piston reaches the top of the cylinder per cycle?

Find the top dead center mark on the pulley, pull the plugs, or at least the number 1 plug, and either bump it with the starter, or turn the crankshaft with a big wrench on the nut.
If you use the wrench, leave the distributor cap off just in case so it can't fire.

Put your finger over the spark plug hole on number 1, and you should feel pressure as the top dead center mark approaches the pointer on the pulley.
If you don't, keep turning, that is the wrong one.

When you feel the pressure and the pointer is at TDC, stop and check the rotor in the distributor.

It should be pointing at the number 1 plug wire on the cap. If not, pull the distributor out, turn it until it is, and work it back in.

May take a couple of tries, and you may have to start it in slightly off because it will turn slightly as it goes in past the gears.

The oil pump is driven by the end of the distributor shaft, and if its not lined up, you will have to reach down in the hole with a screwdriver like he said and turn it until it lines up.
