Thanks to Root Breaker I now have a brand new genuine aftermarket replacement grille for Big Ugly and want to paint it to match the truck. It's the non-chrome silverish paint finish (argent I think?). Should I just spray bomb it with primer and then spray the topcoat on or is the primer unneeded?

I painted my stock grill on my 88k5 flat black. All I did was sand it down with some 320 and sprayed it with the ole rattle can and imo it came out great.

grey scotch bright, degreaser and some elbow grease

1.5 years later I have seen it and it still looks nice.

I went a little darker to match my roll cage powder coating,

base coat clear coat,

for something such as a grill where you would want a low shine, I would just spray bomb it using quality materials from your local auto paint supply

in my 86 build thread I think I described it in more detail

I've got some flat black camo paint that matches the CARC black on Big Ugly and also some CARC green touch up paint. It'll be one of those colors...I kinda like the green but the black would be cool...and the wife hates the camo...passionately...

I painted one walmart flat black, it turned out great and has held up great. I washed the parts with simple green and a blue shop towel. Then used some Bull Dog adhesion promoter spray I bought at Oreily's, then sprayed the walmart flat black. Very easy t do, looks good and easy to touch up if needed.

I just cleaned mine with degreaser, masked it, and shot it with rattlecan Argent Silver urethane wheel paint. Last summer.

I did the same flat black spray bomb job on my grill. Turned out really nice. Best part is flat black is pretty much flat black. If you ever get a chip or scratch in your grill... easy touch up my man.

Flat black it is. Already did the light buckets as the CARC makes a nice base coat.

However here's a lesson for ya...always check the paint cabinet to make sure you have enough paint to do everything. Grille just has a few splotches of black on it right now.

Did cut the grille up to replicate the CUCV grille. That was fun...hot plastic goo flying around.

Just realized I never put up a finished product picture. Installed it almost two months ago now.

Thanks again to Rootbreaker!

i have a personal preference for semi-flat black, not too glossy, and not too dull and flat where everything sticks to it. I have done my current grille with it, and my old steel wheels i ran for awhile.

x2 on wal-mart's flat black... i've used it on TONS of stuff, and it always holds up... plus, for a buck a can, it can be touched up... another thing i like about it, is that it doesn't get 'too flat' like chalky, it stays somewhere around semi-gloss, but a little flatter...
