I stripped one of the holes on the housing. (pinion assembly retainer bolt) So, can I just get a thread insert or is there something special? Its only 65 foot/pounds.

Heli-coil...

I can't remember if those are through holes or blind. If they're through holes you'll have to wash the drill chips out of the housing, and be quite thorough about it.

I truely hate to disagree with Rene's response, but - I believe for 65lb/ft you should really use an threaded insert.

Heli coils are just that, a coiled wire designed to a specified thread pitch which can be distorted to a likeness thread pitch etc, and they also tend to back out with the securing fastener (bolt).

Threaded inserts are of a solid state, like a rod which is tapped on the outer and inner surfaces, to a specific thread pitch. These use locking tabs or other permanent means to secure the insert to the prepared hole being repaired. With these installed, they can not back out if the securing fastener (bolt) is removed, and you also have a solid contact to the wall of the prepared hole.

I guess everyone has their own opinion. Mine is the solid state insert.

A Time-sert is an example of the solid state insert.

Good luck !

I rebuilt a 14 bolt not long ago that that happened to, but only half the threads were gone, so I got a longer bolt, and it grabed the good threads and torqued fine.

and they are blind holes.

Well that's good to know. It only pulled out about 3/8" of thread. So you think there is enough in there to just get a longer bolt?

deffinately try a longer bolt 1st. you'll likely get away with that just fine.

and there is absolutely nothing wrong with helicoils or timeserts. Ive used both. lots of times. red loctite the helicoil on install good to go. obviously wait for it it set and dry before installing the bolt. I use whatever the shop supplies at the time. it doesn't matter they all work if done right.
