I have no idea what is going on. Tried to start up my engine today and I wasn't getting fuel. Pulled the mechanical pump and found out the pushrod isnt moving! It doesn't fall out either like it normally does. Its just wedged up there and stuck.

I even cranked the engine and it doesnt budge at all.
I checked compression to make sure I didn't have a broken/striped cam and compression is good.

Any ideas????????

Thanks

If you don't have a bolt threaded too far in to the front of the block , then maybe your eccentric on the cam is flat :dunno:

otherwise get the thing out , crocus cloth it , and wire brush the bore to be sure it can move .

Thats the problem I cant get it out. I squirted it with PJ blaster and tried to wiggle it with a screw driver and it wont budge.

This engine ran fine 6 months ago so i dont think it could be the eccentric.
There is not a bolt in the front of the block holding it up either.

Oh ya, its a 454.

any other ideas???

thanks

Simple enough temporary fix is to run an electric fuel pump and deal with the original issue when you can.

I was thinking about that. Recommendations on a pump to get? I am sure I can wire and plumb one up in a second but I need one that I can get at a local parts shop. No Time!!!

Just hit your local parts store and tell them you need a cheap electric fuel pump, they should have one on the shelf.

The advance auto parts stores usually stock a nicer Holly pump and the cheapy Mr. Gasket pump. I have used both and I prefer the Holly pump but then you have to deal with the fuel pressure regulator.

well, maybe you'll just have to give me your 454, I have a nice 350 that has a rod that moves. we'll call it a trade.

Ya I bet! The biggest problem is that I am moving on Wed and need this thing to run and move!!!

Its the weirdest thing that the rod is stuck up there. I just picked up a cheap airtex electric fuel pump. Just need the thing to run, I will deal with the rod later.

I'm not familiar with bow tie engines. Esspecially not BBCs. I was think the rod poked out from the timing cover. Is this wrong?

Yep we stock a holley and mr gasket pump at advance. Just remember the pump goes close to the tank, they like to push not pull.

Gotcha. No way to see in threw the timing cover.

Just shoved real hard on the pushrod and got it to go in a little more. It came back to were it was stuck before when I cranked the engine. So def the cam eccentric is good. Seems like the spring on the fuel pump arm is not strong enough to push the rod back up.

I cant get to this rod threw the oil pan can I?

Sorry for my ignorance but what is the rod you are refering to? It isn't the rod on the fuel pump itself is it?

There is a push-rod that rests against an eccentric on the camshaft. The push-rod pushed down on the pump arm which moves the diaphragm down. There is a large spring on the arm of the pump with pushes the rod/diaphragm back up. Then it repeats.

I think it must have a bur or something on it, I can feel it scraping when I push it in.

*** New Bright Idea*** I am going to weld a bolt to the bottom of the push rod and pull it out!

Very intresting, learn something new everyday. I would say if you can't push the rod by hand then its not the sping in the pump. Let me know when you figure it out so I can be in the know.

Ya thats what I was saying. I can't push it by hand which means there is no way the spring in the pump can push it. Just welded a bolt onto the bottom of it but I am going to wait for it to cool off and get smaller before I try and pull it out.
