I’m looking for something cheap to put under my carpet for a year or two. I need to pull out the carpet and deep clean it and trash the current insulation. Doing this because 1) it smells pretty rough and 2) I need to check out the rust situation under the carpet. Looking for something to put down that’ll work for awhile but isn’t too expensive until I get rust repaired. Once rust is repaired I’ll do a long term solution for the floor insulation. Any suggestions on something that would work well for up to a few years?

i went to home depot and got aluminum peal and seal for ducting and thats what i used way cheaper than name brand stuff and works
was the house brand of frost king

I'd just use carpet pad.
Any concerns with heat coming off the floor if I go with standard carpet padding? That’d probably be the cheapest/easiest. And super easy to just pull out later. No peel and stick stuff to clean up

What’s in there now looks like it may be normal carpet insulation with something else layered in. I don’t have a great pic

Floor isn't going get hot enough to affect it.

Should I put anything between floor/padding or padding/carpet? Or should I be good to go with just padding

I know a few people that have used it. I'd just put it right on the metal and carpet over it.

I've used the aluminized bubble wrap type insulation under carpets in my trucks before..best to paint the floors good before hand though,as this stuff cant "breathe" and will let moisture accumulate--but the factory just padding that is much like the household carpet underlayment gets soggy and never dries also, which is what rots the floors out most of the time..if you don't mind a little odor, applying some motor oil ,linseed oil on the floor, will ward off rust longer too..

I have also put some closed cell foam under carpets in my K5's rear compartment bed floor, the kind they sell as "camping mats" or exercise mats that doesn't absorb water like a sponge..some carpets for homes have a closed cell foam backing already made to the back side of the carpet, that wont let rust form under it much either..

In my 93 k1500 blazer. When I redid the carpet I used a closed cell foam underlayment from home depot. Whatever was cheapest, it said doesn't absorb moisture on it, so seemed good to go. On the pass side where the catalytic converter is directly under the floor pan, I used some aluminum heat reflective material from home depot. Two sheets of aluminum with insulation inside. Placed it on pan first then padding on top. Only used it where it got hot.

Been three years and no issues, and nothing is stuck to the metal. So if inside gets flooded with water it all comes out easily.

I put a layer of reflectix under my rubber floor. Not the ideal use of the product but a lot of the vanlife people use it in a similar way under their floors.

I've had mine in for a couple of months and can say it's helped so far keep my heat in. We will see how it does keeping the engine heat out when temps get hot again.
