So this is about as subjective of a topic as you can get BUT I'm looking hard at a metal building/shop and taxes are already a mother so I asked around (city, county, metal building company) to see if there's anyone who can tell me how much my taxes will go up with a building and true to form all those slimy a$$holes just tell me to build it and then I'll know how much they will be.

So while nobody will have the same experience, I'm genuinely curious if anyone noticed a significant difference in their property taxes after building a non air conditioned shop.

Oh, and for the record my property taxes are 8k already. Started off at 3k in 2012 and have gone up an additional 5k in 10 years. I think they are ridiculous but it is what it is since I choose to live here.

I’m in Alabama so, knock on wood, our taxes are low compared to most states. I had a metal sided 18x36 pole barn built almost 10 years ago and it didn’t have any noticeable effect on my property value or homeowners insurance.

Conditioned space is not the only thing that matters, if you have power, that makes it taxable. I am not sure but I think insulation also is a requirement.
That is at least here in California from what I was told by the city.
So any outbuilding that has no insulation and no power, will not be taxed or regulated like a living space

Any improvements to a property could be seen as raising the property's value. It is then a question of what rate the improvements would be taxed at. Even an uninsulated cabin with no power has value. It's going to depend on the assessor's valuation and tax rate, which vary wildly state to state and county to county. The property's zoning classification will affect taxing also. The assessor is the only one who will be able to give you an estimate.

Generally it’s a percentage of the property value so if you spend $50k on a building (or a kitchen), your value goes up $50k. So figure out what percentage you’re paying now and figure it out that way.

A lot of assessors go off of permits. The value is sometimes listed on the permits.

The only way to get accurate info is to contact tour assessor office. Everything else is speculation.
