So my run of the mill 5.7 tbi motor has a really annoying valve noise and needs a rebuild. I am considering swapping a Vortec block and using a tbi/vortec manifold since I want to keep it relatively the same. I have searched and read post's and can't seen to find the answers.....

What all do I need for a swap? Plan is to get a vortec motor from a wrecking yard and rebuild it over the next couple months..

What year Vortec motor is best?
What parts do I need to make the swap?
What do I need from the donor vehicle?
And it needs to pass smog as well..

Or should I just rebuild the TBI motor?

If you go with a vortec engine, or even swap to vortec heads you will need to visit your local referee station in order to smog it the first time. Once the referee goes through your rig and attaches a plate to the A-pillar then you can smog it anywhere in the future. Keep in mind that the engine must be the same year or newer than your rig and must retain all emissions equipment for the engine being installed.

The EGR setup will be a nuisance with the Vortec heads.

Good to know. I didn't figure that into the build. Looks like i'll keep the TBI motor an build it how I can. Thanks
