Ok i have a friend that has a nice 383 on a jeep but he is upset because he keeps tearing the starter off the block, thats what he told me, so hes thinking on ditching the engine and getting the stock V6 so im all over that engine but can this be posible???????can a started do that if so what a good fix?

tearing it off, as in the starter comes loose and the engine kicks back while starting, and then the starter tear's itself off the block?
does he use knurled starter bolts, maybe try some locktight on em?

Or is he hitting it on something and tearing it off.....

either way, how has he not cracked the block there yet?
might want to check that close.

He mentioned that he has broke the square portion of the starter, the piece were the bolts go through i want the damn engine but if this is a big problem i will step away.

I once broke off the starter off my old 73 when I went though some whoops with stock suspension--the front drive-line had hit the starter.:eek1:

Uhm, it's a strip of metal that bolts to the motor end of the starter, and to the engine block.

yep, no starter brace, but that did not help my starter because what was left on block still showed marks from the drive-line.

If the engine is a higher compression engine and the starter brace is missing and or the wrong bolts are being used (starter bolts are special) then this will happen.

out of all the Chevys i have ever owned, i have never had one that had this started brace you all speak of, heck i have never even seen one, and i've been around a number of vehicles.

If anyone has a picture of a starter brace I would like to see it. I have never seen one either:confused:

Ive only ever seen em on the diesels. I know my 6.2 has one, but when I pulled the 454 out of my parts burban (before it became a 496) it had no brace, my old 350 had no brace, etc etc.

I've seen em on Corvettes, big and small block, and have a SBC out of a van 1974 vintage, that has one on it....and many that haven't had one....it seems sporadic for the usage of them.

I've seen em on a RARE occasion... my 77 had one..

certainly not a requirement on any Chevy motor.. high compression or not.... I've worked on thousands of high po marine BB's and none had one.. matter of fact, never seen one on any marine app..

this sounds like some install mistake... bolts, etc.... if it's a smoking deal, I'd jump on it....

i knew a guy that had a put together an engine and it was doing that.to the point where he broke the mounting spot off the block.im pretty sure he had the wrong flexplate on it.he ended up jb welding the block and adding that starter brace to make it stay lined up.after he changed to the right flexplate of course.

I had a 6.2 that kept breaking starter bolts just had to shim the starter down with the shims you get at napa. It was a reman starter, guy at napa said they have had problems with them before. People leave the startes loose causing wear on the foot and/or block. When they get them in for reman they just blast them and build them. Mine just had enough wear in both places i guess. Not sure if thats your problem but hope it can help.
