Simply, what on earth is needed to perform this swap?

How much is involved, i.e. obviously dropping the trans and tcase, drive shaft, etc... but what else? How many hours (ballpark) is involved, giving everything fits properly with no SNAFUs. I have access to pretty much any tools I may need and failry knowledgeable on mechanical stuff (but am still learning the 4x4 stuff). I've swapped out C4 trans several times, swapped out a 460 for a 351, etc.

Anyways,
Where can I get the parts I need? I'm not sure on the trans yet, maybe bowtieoverdrives or craigslist and rebuild it locally.... I just don't know, as I am not familiar with what is needed. When I regear, should it be before or after the trans swap?

I haven't wheeled yet b/c my 2.73 gears are awful and I am ashamed of them. I mostly use my k5 on the highway (hence the OD desire) and will probably do light to moderate wheeling (eventually...)

If there are other posts on this, please point me in the right direction... I've casually attempted looking before but got overwhelmed!

Thanks in advance!

Search this forum & the 73-91 K5/Suburban/Truck form with your subject line and you will get plenty of info.;)

you'd need to run the fitz-all spacer, or change the 700 output shaft to the shorty... I'm running the spacer to avoid any front shaft to pan clearance issues... but I ditched the 208 in favor of a 205 behind my 700...

I'm guessing your overall length is going to change, thus you'll need driveshaft work I'm thinking... a 700/208 x-member should be readily available... heck, I have an extra downstairs...

2.73 gears

and 35s? do you measure your 0-60 with a calender? :haha:

my diffs are only packing 3.08s. that's nothing impressive off the line either, but my tires are only 33s.

i'd do the tranny first. you'll benefit on both ends of the scale with a 700. overdrive, obviously, but you'll also get a deeper first gear to make up for the puny diff ratio. if you regear first, you're gaining on the bottom, but you'll hurt your top speed. and btw, i've wheeled my 82 with 700r4 plenty with no problems, so don't worry about that. not saying it's bulletproof, or even close, but drive it right and it will last.
