A little update and a couple of questions.

Finally today i had time and a friend to start on this thing, for the transfer case out, the exhaust off, the tranny is ready to come out just a few bolts and 1 cable, this cable is attached to the carb, not sure on how it comes off really.

ran out of time today to go further, next weekend it will be out fully then i will start shopping for a new tran.

My questions are, the cable on the carb, should i disconnect from the tran or the carb which is best option? because it was a pain in the ass to get it even slightly off from the tran.. second is at the stage im on, only the bell housing bolts left to come off, (as far as i know) are there any other road blocks i can expect?

Thanks guys, :thumb:

That's the TV cable. Take it off at the carb. Pull it forward, and it will pop off the carburetor linkage. Hold the linkage closed.

thanks man, i get most of that, but what do you mean by hold the linkage closed?

:dunno: hehe

Hold the throttle closed with one hand, pop the cable off with the other.

Did you ever get a new transmission during the summer?

Not yet, iv been playing catch up ever since my wedding in may, so its still ongoing, the k5 still sits on jack stands, my buddy who was helping me now has carpel tunnel in his hands so he cant really do much these days so iv been on my own with it and its a little intimidating for me seeing as im a novice mechanic, but im hoping to get a used tran soon from a pull and pay within a couple months, its all i can afford and im hoping for the best.

Once this tranny crap is sorted there will be a lot of updates to this thread.

Swapping out the trans can be intimidating the first time. It's always a learning experience and having someone with experience to help you is really helpful. Last year I blew up a 700R4 and got me TH400 from the junkyard, rebuilt it and swapped it out. It was quite a challenge but now I have more confidence in doing stuff like that. Plus I can tell what's wrong with stuff easier now so that I can fix it myself and save lots of money. I'm not naturally into that kind of stuff either. Trust me, I'm the type of guy that can't even let the hood up without breaking something. I've learned lots of stuff since I got my old truck. You'll get there too.

Thanks for the words man, ill get there eventually and i will be a better mechanic from it. after i get the new tran in there and its all working, im going to take my time with the broken one and rebuild it from the bottom up and learn that sucker in and out so when the new one dies ill have a perfect one ready to go. Did the TH400 bolt up just like the 700?

Yeah pretty much. It does need a transfer case with a 32 spline input, but you can swap your current NP208's input shaft to a 32 spline. I also had to set up a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the TH400's vacuum modulator. You don't have to use one, but if you don't, the trans won't shift into second until 30 mph and will hold it until 55 mph. But the cooler lines bolted up without too much bending and the torque rod thing did too. I also had to rig up a 12 volt wire from the brake pedal so it would down shift when I got on the gas like it's supposed to. I know this sounds like a lot but it wasn't too bad. I feel like I could do it again a lot easier since I know what I'm doing now.

I had a thread that told what all I went through to get it working.

It was awesome to have my dad helping me. He's a GM guru who's rebuilt hundreds of TH400s and TH350s. He's also done some TH700R4s, but he said he wasn't impressed with them at all. He's the one that gave me the idea to go to the 400 instead of rebuilding the 700R4 that was in the truck.

im checking that thread out right now, i would give anything to have a gm guru helping me, hahah.

It's super helpful. The easiest thing would be to get yours rebuilt or get a rebuilt one just like it and put it in. You could take it to a shop and have them do the swap but it would probably cost more than what the truck is worth.

The plan as of now is to get a used one from a pull and pay, i mean it seems pretty safe one would think, most cars that go in there go in because of a collision of some kind, so i would think its a safe bet that ill find something that will run for a while, also, its 130$ for one, so not much to risk compared to buying a new one or something alike, once i get it running i will rebuild the old one my self, taking my time to learn it and do it right so when this new/used one goes out ill have that backup ready to go.

Now to just do it, lol...

Sounds like a plan. That way you know you have the right adapter and all that. Plus they'll probably work with you if you put it in and it quits on you after like one day or something.

they said i can bring it back and get another one if it doesnt work, that would be such a pain, but at least i would get really good at removing a tranny i guess.

That would suck. There's a way to adjust the throttle valve cable that's important to get right. If you mess it up, it will burn the tranny up in a hurry. You may want to do a search on that. Hopefully you won't have to mess with it and it will work with no adjustment.

i crawled under there just now to see if i could locate the bolt or screw thats holding the tranny dipstick on and its all so caked with fluid its hard to make anything out, not to mention its a tight space to start with, i need to get that thing off before i can even drop this thing.

after that and the tv cable its ready to come down after a few bolts.
