Yeah,it helps when they actually show up,period..even if only to tell you we cant do it today--or at least CALL you!..
The contractor who I hired in 1992 who I was told to call by several friends who had him do their projects, to pour the foundation & slab in my garage, didn't show up for 2 weeks each time, after me calling daily to ask where the F are you!--the building inspector was pissed,he showed up and waited an hour several days they said they were coming to do the pour-- and they failed to appear--then he didn't show up the day the cement finally was poured, and threatened to put a "stop work order" on the project because he wasn't there to verify they put in a 18" footing and used re-bar in it--luckily I had taken pictures as the pour was being done, and that satisfied him..
A month later I was promised by the same contractor "now had sufficient help" to pour the slab with no delays...still took him 2 weeks to get to my project..his response was "well--I did quote you a really cheap price ,and you said you weren't in a big rush--told you I'd do it when I got to it."...
Yeah--but I called them in late September--my walls got poured the first week of November, after we had some early frosts, and it was the day before Thanksgiving the floor slab got poured..
They used "fibermesh" concrete with no additional reinforcement on the slab, and a month later it had several cracks the full width of the slab...I was assured "it's plenty strong with no re-bar"...granted it has never heaved or got any worse, but I'm hesitant to put a lift in the garage, slab is 6" thick until it gets about 3 feet from the edges, they tapered it to 3-4" there, they did it all in one pour, and had to "stretch" it to do the full slab with one mixer load..
When I called to get "free estimates" on my roof repair last year--four out of 6 contractors never showed up or talked to me--when I called to ask where they were, they said "OH--we just drove by at 6 am,measured your roof,it'll be (insert outrageous price here)...so it was "take it or leave it"...one of them was a guy I considered a friend I'd known for years too..
I passed..
I hired the one guy who came 20 minutes after I called to get an estimate and hung up,the owner of the company, who actually pulled a ladder off his truck, climbed up on the roof, measured the ROOF,not the house's footprint, walked around and made sure the decking wasn't rotted ,etc--and despite his price of 4 grand to just do 1/4 of the hip roof,he said he'd rebuild the top of the chimney, clean and re-attach the gutters,do any needed decking repair, use synthetic undelayment, and clean up all the mess involved--he even left a dump trailer in my yard for a week to hold the old shingles, and said "if you have any trash to dispose of,just toss it in,I'll get rid of it no charge"..
He'll be at the top of the list if I ever get enough money to do the rest of the roof over before I croak..
