Week in and week out a cruise-ship magician treats a new audience to the same illusions. The captain's parrot catches all the magician's performances and eventually figures out how the tricks are done. Soon the bird begins giving away the magician's secrets in the middle of the show by squawking such things as, "He's hiding your card up his sleeve!" The magician is furious, yet he's powerless to do anything because the bird belongs to the captain. Then one stormy night, the ship sinks, drowning everyone but the magician and the parrot. The two find themselves adrift on a piece of debris, staring at each other hatefully and not saying a word. After five days of quiet, the parrot breaks. "OK, I give up," he squawks. "Where's the ****ing ship?"
