The RedBurb

Every Part Is Replaceable
First valve cover off. What do y’all think about the overall appearance? Clean or totally jacked? This is my first time seeing beneath the valve cover.

And to add to my list, looks like my hydroboost is leaking too.

Any advice on new or remanufactured hydro boost brake boosters? Which brands are better and are new ones worth the extra cost or just go with reman?

The valve cover is as clean as I have ever seen.
The valve train looks like it sat at one point and condensation happened but it's not bad enough to cause problems.
Mine was bad after sitting 7 years rust seized the engine.

I always go with new when it is an option.
Don't remember brands now other than bendix

Well I at least know why the valve covers were leaking. In almost all the areas where the leaks were the worst, the bolts were loose. Like, remove-with-my-fingers loose. I know you’re not suppose to over tighten, but I’ll definitely be applying some blue loctite and making sure they’re good and snug.

And while we are talking about leaks, I had noticed prior to uninstalling, that the CDR appeared to be leaking oil. Seems to me like it would be prudent to replace it, no?

Don’t have a photo with it installed, but that’s pretty much what it looked like.

That works too!

:saweet: I didn’t see any on Amazon, but maybe I misspelled something. Oh well, Rock Auto was cheaper than the local NAPA. They wanted $132 I was like ... :yikes:

My old one has a bracket welded to it that secures it to the intake manifold. I could not fund any like that so I guess I’ll just have to do without the bracket.

New question: (and apologies for question-bombardment, new at this), in the scraping and scrubbing off of the old silicone, the paint also scraped away on the underside of the bolt flanges (see pictures above). Don’t want these to rust out so do I need to hit those areas with some more paint? At first I was thinking the oil would keep it protected but then I realized that area would be masked off with the new silicone. :screwy:

I never have painted the sealing surface, but as long as the paint sticks, I don't see an issue.

Hmmmm, I think I’m understanding what you’re getting at though. Painting the seal surface could interfere with the seal adhesion. So perhaps it would be better to just leave it alone ...

Looks shiny clean to me.

Yes, I'd leave the sealing surface alone. Clean off any peeling paint and then leave it as-is. Paint helps keep the outside from rusting. But the inside is bathed in oil, and the sealing surface gets that coat of weatherproof silicone. It's fine. If your paint doesn't stick well, and you put the silicone on top, the silicone will peel off with the failed paint (plus you'll be back to leaking again). If you manage to get a large chip of paint to fall through the valve train into the oil pan it can play havoc with the oil system.

Since there's no gain and some risk, I'd skip painting the inside.

Rusting through a valve cover seems unlikely in your climate, unless you're spending lots of time in the salt fog down at the beach. So you don't need to paint the outside, either. It's just aesthetics.

CDR leaking oil externally is unlikely (unless the can split in half. What is likely is a leak from the rubber grommet. Definitely replace that while you're changing the CDR. It should be listed in the rockauto catalog.

Replacing it periodically is prudent, as a worn CDR valve will dump extra oil into the intake.
