Think it would be a good DD?

As far as the newer body style trucks go, I've had both the 4.8 and the 5.3. The 4.8 was in a single cab, short bed 2wd 01 GMC. I got somewhere around 15 - 18mpg in town and around 20ish on the highway. The 5.3 I have is in my current truck, an 02 Chevy extended cab short bed 2wd. I get around 16 - 18 in town/mixed driving and around 20 - 22 on the highway if its empty. Loaded for bear I get around 13 - 15 depending on hills. Both trucks are stock except for a single in/dual out flowmaster with pipe all the way back.

Before you buy a Cherokee I would take it for an hour or so drive and see how comfortable you are being 6'9. My wife had one and I am 6'1 250 and with the seat all the way back felt like I needed to go a little farther driving for extended periods would get uncomfortable. Also having to duck down to get in it can become annoying. It was a great truck and the room was my only complaint with it. The best mileage I ever got was around 14mpg mine was a 4.0 5 speed with 33" tires. I dont own a diesel either but a friend had a stock CUCV K5 and says he got 28- 30 mpg on the highway, he does drive like an old man though.

I know if i get the jeep that i would lift it and put 31's under it. So there goes my mpg.

Also thinking about a toy pickup or 4runner. Would like to stick with a suv for this.

I also found a landrover seires II. Maybe a 4.3 in that. Always wanted to build one. but that is some time away, since i need to finish other stuff first.

the 6.0 in my 07 is night and day from my old 03. it reminds me of my old 5.3. And when you hit 4 grand there is just another boost of power.

Ive had a 07 and 08 2500 with the 6.0s Love the motor, and teh 4 grand snap too:laugh:

Do you have the problem that sometimes off idle you go to give it gas and it has a second or two delay. When I was pulling some anhydrous tanks at times you could put it to the floor and get no response for a couple seconds.

Ive noticed it must be computer controlled traction crap to. Even in tow/haul itll cut your power if you start to spin the tires.

Im dreading snow drifts this winter with it.

I'm kind of pissed with my truck. lots of noise, squiks. and i have a thing were it seems to give itself a tap of gas at a light. also the volume on the nav. does not work all the time, only on the steering wheel. It's going back on monday. miss the 03 at times

suck it up Trevor and buy a used ford fiesta. tear out the front seat, sit in the back and get 40 mpg. :D

what about the 4.2l straight 6 that gm came out with a few years ago. it was supposedly rated at 275 hp and 295 lb-ft. i think isuzu is still using it in some light trucks

6.2L diesel in the old K5. Just go find a CUCV Blazer and with a 700R4 swap and stockish tires you'll see 25mpg pretty easily, 20mpg commonly.

For other things look into a 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Isuzu Hombre, Isuzu Amigo, etc with a 4-cyl engine and you'd definitely see good gas mileage. Even consider the extended cab pickups as you can put the seat all the way back and get a decent bit of room. I had a buddy in the Marines who drove a '92 Xtra Cab Toyota and he was 6'8". Tight fit but it worked for him.
I'm a big proponent of the Suzuki/Geo/Chevy Tracker/Sidekick/Vitara/Grand Vitara/XL7 series vehicles. High teens with the V6's and low 20's to mid 20's with the 4-cyls. They're also suprisingly roomy, people underestimate their interior room.

I get approx 22 freeway mpg in my 96 K1500 with a Vortec 4.3L and 5 speed standard. However, that truck probally weighs a bit less than a K5, and is more aerodynamic too. In the city, my gas mileage is no better than my old 74 350 used to get.

I can see you getting 20 mpg out of a Vortec 4.3L in an old K5 on the freeway if you keep the rpms around 2400 or so.

That said, you can get 25 mpg with a 6.2L, and 30 mpg with a 4BTA :D

Y'all need to quit buying all these brand spankin' new trucks :D
I can smoke the living daylights out of the tires on my '00 and it doesn't complain...and when you step on it...she'll move :)
