My 87 k5 smokes when i start it for about 10 secs, then the first one or two times i come off the gas in neutral or park, but once i drive for 30 secs it fine. This is should be valve seals right?

I;m doin em on sunday so lemme know if you have any tricks!

I' gonna use the rope thing as i have no compressor. anything else?

Also I had a 74 350 and it had the o rings at the top, does my 87 tbi 305 need those or just the umbrella's?

Thanks for the help!

Re: This is valve seals right?

Yup, valve seals....

Just Umbrellas....

Rope should work, good luck. You got a spring compresser?
Any problems with the springs, or a bigger cam in the future? Now would be a good time to change those springs too....

Re: This is valve seals right?

Yes that would be Exhaust valve seals to be excact. The rope trick should work fine. Just make sure you put a little lube on the seals so you dont burn them out the first time you start it, good luck.

Re: This is valve seals right?

Cool, thats what i thought.

No cam in the future, i have a problem with hopping up a 305!

What should i lube them with? Just 10w30? Or is there something specific?

Thanks for the replys.
I have a valve spring compressor.

Oh yeah, while i'm here! Rocker arms, how do i adjust them after i put it all together. Is it snug that 1/2 turn?

Help me out!

Ryan

Hope you have better luck than I did. The seals did not stop
all of my smoke. Wished I would have spent that money on
new heads. Just another option to think about.

If the guides are worn, then the only choice is to rebuild them....

Adjust the rocker arms by making sure it is closed. Then spin the p/rod with one hand while tightening the rocker with the other. When you start to feel a little drag, then go a 1/2 turn more.

Everyone has a different opinion on how much more to tighten the rocker down. Being consistant with anywhere between 1/4 to 3/4 should be fine....

I might have missed it, but you guys forgot the little 0-rings that seal the retainer to the valve stem

Also, more likely the intake than exhaust... thats where the vacuum is, and also where it gets drawn into the engine to burn..

If the seals don't cure it.. it might be the intake gaskets.. Chevys (aculaly all intake sealed V engines) tend to leak at the bottom of the intake port, the gaskets get hard and they suck oil from the valley area..acts just like bad valve seals...

Actually it points to exhaust vavle seals if it smokes when the engine is first started due to oil leaking into the exhaust. if it was intake seals it would leak all the time hot or cold, mostly during decelleration.
