Thump, when stereo turns on, and when song changes

When the song changes doesn't make sense 
Amp trouble perhaps , loose ground , gremlins
Thump when turned on is what older amps used to do , I say used to do because most new amps bring the levels up slowly before sound is routed through the speakers .

"cheap" amps still make this noise today.
when the song changes leads me to believe you have a problem elsewhere though.
what components are you using? headunnit, amp, using an ipod or mp3 with it?
