Tips for passing emissions***Passed...barely***

I know this isnt a chevy.. But. I worked with a guy who lived in Mass. He had an 87 toyota truck. Beat lol. Every year for his sticker he set the idle unreal high and he dumped 4 bottles of dry gas in. Drove for 1 hour before shop and never turned it off even while inside talking too the techs. He said too me year after year that a hot motor burns clean. Im not sure this was helpful, But im trying. Good luck.

Thats what I did too--add a few bottles of isopropanal dry gas to a 1/4 of a tank of gas, drive it till its good & hot,and DONT let it cool off before you get in the inspection ay!--that is what flunks 90% of vehicles, they sit in the parking lot idling for up to an hour, before its your "turn" to get inspected!...then its too late, even if the engine it at "normal" temparature, the combustion chamber wont be,and it'll let more fuel go unburned--..

Advancing the timing is better than retarding it too,and increasing idle speed and leaning out the idle mixture screws on my Edelbrock's was a must,to get them to pass at Idle...one big block I had would fail every time, till one guy I went too took the PCV valve out of the valve cover, then it passed easy,I guess there was enough blow-by to raise the hydrocarbons way up....

WTF??..so much for that whole page post!......

I beleive they said with the GVW and year of my rig, i did not need cats. I do not have them as well.

My HC count was 377 and needs to be below 350

My CO was 9.6629 and it needs to be below 3

I have seen humbers similar to this in the past with vehicles, and was told simply, running too rich. with the HC's that close to passing, if the CO's were brought down to passing level, the HC's would drop as well.

The HC's would be alot worse if the cat wasn't working. If one is installed anyways..

a weak ignition coil will also cause high readings.

things like high idle speed, change timing etc will only work if they are still within specs. in ca all that has to be within factory specs or the vehicle fails, if the tech is doing what hes supposed to.

running higher temps works for hc and co, but if your state test for nox the higher temps will elevate this reading and casue a failure.

So I loaded up on some "guaranteed 2 pass" changed the plugs and leaned out the idle a bit. failed, just barely. so went out in the parking lot and cranked down the carb some more and passed my the skin of my ass.

AND...the guy told me that next year they are making it even harder to pass :angry1:

So, all my Portland K5ers...its getting harder to own these trucks. my rig has a box stock gm crate 350 in great shape and a 600 cmf edelbrock and it squeeked buy. lame

so now I have 2 years to figure out if i need to sell her off and either get something post 74 or something with a damn puter...:dunno:

thats why my junk isnt registered in town. the k5 wont pass, and i dont have to pay for the deq test.

I have one to put on. Not sure how big a change that will make emissions wise tho. Especially with tighter limits

stupid oregon

all you need is a friends address.
change your address online. fill it out with the new address, then list your actual address as the mailing addy. thats what i do. all my dmv mail comes to my house. but my junk is registered in seaside. they make it really easy

i might have to delete this

that's bs.. how you can you change the required emission numbers???? if it passed with a NOX of y for the last 10 yrs, it should always pass with that number... just lowering the number to meet some new tree-hugger hybrid #'s is wrong, and ghey...

What did you have your idle speed set at? My Jimmy would fail everytime at 650 rpm, but at 900 it'd pass with flying colors. I had the 1406 POS too.

I don't have a tach, but I cranked it up a good bit, any more and it really slams the tranny when you drop it in gear
