Well i got the bug for bigger tires finally and i need some help with this.

Here is what i have so far.

'78 K10, mild-350, built th350 with stall, np208, d44 with 4.88's and an OX, GM12-bolt with full Detroit and 4.88's, 4 inch lift and 35x12.50r15s.

Here's a pic of the truck as of 2 weeks ago. If i have to i am willing to cut the fenders but i would prefer not to.

Also i probably only put like 2500 road miles a year on this truck. Mostly just used in South Florida mud and trails.

Here are the choices.

(4) 39.5x13.50r15's Irocs with 85% tread $600-700 (local)
(would require more lift or cutting fenders)

(4) 35x14.00r15's Ground Hawgs with 95% tread $400 (150 miles away)
(would fit with no work but really a 34" tire)

(5) 37x13.50r15's Pitbull Rockers with 95% tread $600 (Local)
(would fit with zero rates but not sure how they perform in the mud)

Thanks,
Alex

12 views and no opinions yet??? Do they all suck or or should i invest in rockwells and tractor tires? (it'll only cost me about $4-5k more to do that)

bigger is always better...id go with the pit bulls for now unless u can do the lift as well to accommodate the 39's

A poll might get more responses.

I would go with the Iroc's for limited amount you use it and not really for rock krawling they would last a good long time and an angle grinder and some discs are cheap.

I wouldnt go bigger unless you are prepared to deal with the problems, mainly ur axles braking and then u have to buy new rims again

X2 Id go with the 37`s , there bigger like you want plus no fender cutting like you also want.

Thanks for the input guys.

Now does anyone know how the Pitbull Rockers handle in the mud with our heavy trucks? They are currently mounted on a Jeep Rubicon and once he found the right PSI, they gripped and cleaned out well.

I'm leaning towards this deal because he just wants to trade the 5 Rockers for 4 33" Swamper LTBs. I should be able to get those LTBs for less than $150 each.

Here they are in action: He keeps the spare in the cab.

The 35" Ground Hawgs really aren't any bigger...little wider, but that's it.

I think the 39.5's would really be pushing your axles, but the advantage you have is you mentioned mainly playing in the mud. You can fit them with no more lift but would require quite a bit of fender trimming (I run 39.5x15.5 TSL's on a 4" lift) unless you had a lot more lift.

The 37's are probably a good compromise, but still on the borderline of your axles. There are two guys in our club now with K5's, one has a D44 front with a lunchbox locker and 37" Boggers, stock TBI 350, 700r4/208 setup (no crazy crawler gears) and breaks the front almost every time out and he's definitely not a throttle jockey. Another guy just built a CUCV with an open 10-bolt front with the stock 6.2, TH400/208 combo on 36" Hummer tires and on his second ride grenade the stub and u-joint.

Yeah the good thing is that with the OX in the front, i only use it when 3 wheels pulling won't do it. Last trip out (the only trip so far with the axles) i locked the front only maybe 10% of the time cuz i was scared to break something. The only probelm i had was the tires getting caked at the end. I had to get winch several times by a Samurai :doah:cuz all four tires would just spin.

That's why i need tires that clean out well. I won't be going for the 39's cuz it's just asking for something to break. We don't really have rocks, but we have hard ruts and hidden roots that will break an axle real quick.

i like those rockers too i would do it
i had 39.5 iroks on a 10 bolt wheeled it alot in mud and sand with no issues,
im now running 42 iroks i know its going to break.
keep the fromt open and keep it off rocks and it will live. only use 4x4 when you need it.
you would be surprised i do 90% in 2 wheel with a rear locker when others are in 4x4 tire preasure and locker and it saves alot of wear and tear on the front end.
I think most people are just so excited to put it in 4x when its not needed thats why the axles break.

i agree w/mnstrburbon...air em down to 15psi, leave it n 2wd til u need 4wd, leave it unlocked til it needs to be locked...got any pics of the mud u run in that your current tires wont clean???

http://www.nolimit4wd.net/forum/showthread.php?t=99 Here is a post from that trip on a local club's site. If you flip through the post you'll see the area that we all got stuck in. You'll see the Samurai stuck and then a pic with my truck stuck. You'll see that my truck wasn't even really stuck, i just couldn't get traction.

In this 100 yard section everyone got stuck, but i didn't even make it into the deep hole before i lost traction.

You will also see that Rubicon running the Rockers. He got within 10ft of the end when no one, even the sammy made it more than 20ft. Of course, other than me, he's the only one fully locked.

This is 10-20ft into the nasty spot

I'm the only one that couldn't get traction in this picture

The rockers still pulling after everyone else got stuck.

Do the Rockers. The math just adds up and the size is at the limit or above but not so far above like the IROKs. The Hawgs aren't really giving you anything in height, just a need to trim a fender and possibly a firewall due to width (they will scrub and rearrange sheetmmetal). Besides that also gives you a same size spare.

This is my brother and i stuck during the dry season

Also during the dry season, but dry enough that i could just sping the tires to clean them out.

are those Uniroyal Laredo tires u have on it??? if not, what do you have on it now??? airing down the tires makes ALL the difference in the world...even "not so aggressive tires" will benefit from this...
