Got my 400 rebuilt last week and it was missing the vent tube.

What can I put in there now? I looked at a few other cores I have and didn't want to remove them in fear of breaking them. They appear to be simple plastic tubes or even metal, too.

What can I do for a simple fix? :dunno:

how bout a metal nipple from a vacuum port from a carb?

Would it work? What about anything I can get from a hardware store?

If you pull the pump (6 or 8 bolts) those vent tubes just come out the other side, no need to even remove the pan. Just be sure to torque the pump back down to spec. Or you could drill and tap it for an 1/8" NPT and thread a hose barb in there. Just be sure to clean the chips all out.

I use a couple 5/16" UNC x 3" bolts with the heads cut off (and slots cut in the end to unscrew them) as guide pins to put the pump back in.

I cut a spare hard line for brakes that I had and JB welded it in place

Second this method......it's how I have done all of mine....
1/8 mpt x 1/4 flare fitting...
#4 pushlock with a piece of #4 hose....:waytogo:

Tranny has already been torn down, rebuilt, installed, driven and now the truck is resting comfortably in the driveway waiting for the next drive.

I just need a quick and simple fix to get a tube in there before we start getting snow, slush and water.

Well it may be a little late for a simple fix then. Unless you can find a tube that will be a press fit in there that you can cut a few inches off, pound it in, and put a rubber hose on the end of it. Good luck.

First you need to find out if there is still a piece of broken tube up in the case or if the tube was left out all together. If the tube was left out, then you can take a used plastic tube, sand down the ridges at the end, and push it up into the case. For extra insurance you can put a dab of silicone where the tube exits the case casting. You can also use some brake line, knurl it at the end going into the case with a tubing cutter and tap it in, leave a flair on the end and attach a rubber hose to run a vent higher up in the chassis. Apply silicone at the case for insurance. If there is still a hunk of the plastic tube left up in the case the job becomes harder as you dont want to push something up in there and have the remaning part in the case fold up or collapse. In this instance you can use a snug fitting drill bit and slow drill speed to try and extricate the broken chunk. Any of these are most easily accomplished on the bench but as you do not have that luxury, I hope the vent was left out all together by the builder.

I watched my buddy tear it down and then I took the bare housing to the pressure wash to clean it up. The old vent tube was plastic and cracked so we removed all of it. We just forgot to put a new tube back in place so and didn't realize it until it was too late.

I was wondering about those steel brakelines if they would work.

My trans guy has some new GM metal breather tubes that install from the outside. I think they are for a 4l60E or something. He puts them on all my TH400/475s.

Those still go in from the inside but they are a bit longer than the plastic tube and have a nice nipple on the end to hold a rubber hose. PM me your address if you need me to send you one.
