This is on my brothers truck. Its a 1990 Chevy 1500 4x4 with a 350 and 700R4. The truck will not shift out of park... You can move the shifter to right about where reverse would be but you cannot go any farther than that... It seems like something is binding up but the linkage is clear of obstructions and there is fluid in the trans... I'm stumped.

have you checked to confirm linkage movement at the trans?
If it is binding at the trans, you may need to drop the pan to see why the shift lever isn't moving the valve in the valve body.

Yeah, this one should be fairly easy to run down. Either it moves or it doesn't.

I have seen this before, if there is a very heavy load on the transmission. I had to winch a truck up a steep hill slightly to reduce the load where the spur gear would release.

He rolled halfway down, put on the brakes and shifted into park to wait for someone to pull him out.
I hooked to him, and he could not get it out of park. I finally just took up enough slack on the drivetrain to let it release.

The linkage was not moving at the tranny...

There's little to no load on the tranny right now, its parked on a slight angle but sideways. We are gonna try and bump it with my truck on Friday to see if it does anything. This thing was rebuilt last year, if that means anything.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm having the same problem and this thread came up in the search results. Do you remember what the problem/fix was?

If its brandons truck they were talkin bout. Im guessin it involved too many beers and maybe one of those hold my beer moments :dunno::popcorn:

Something broke inside the transmission. I don't remember what it was but they tranny shop took it out and fixed it. Sorry I'm no help

I'd check all your linkages. Disconnect the linkage from the column shifter and try shifting it at the transmission, if it shifts, you know the column/linkage is the problem.

Yeah, that's what I'm about to do. I'm really hoping it's the linkage but I kind of doubt it is. Probably time to start calling the salvage yards and see if I can find a tranny to swap out next weekend and pray that this one holds out until then.

You can pull the pan and see the linkage from there....it's possible something inside gave way, maybe that spring tensioner.

Might try that. Off topic, I assume from your username that you're a C-130 guy. What do you fly? I'm an FE on the U model gunships.

You bet brother. E/H Slicks here...well not literally (since Scott has no Herks) but hoping to head back to the Rock after this tour to get back into the flying! Dyess, Rammy, the Rock and here so far. I know a couple of guys that went from slicks to gunships, though not sure which model.
You're going to find a bunch of good dudes here, always willing to help. Welcome!

Thanks, seems like an awesome community. I flew E's and H3's at LR, H model gunships at Cannon, and now the U boat. I would go back to slicks in a heartbeat, I really miss low levels and assaults, but I've got the AFSOC stink on me now so I doubt I will ever get back where I belong. Thanks again!

I hear ya man...tho I'd love to do something "special", I'm way too old to venture down that road...so I foresee the BJ20 and SR220 in my future (again lol).
But you're right...assaults are a blast, even more so when a student finally just "gets it"
